They hit it big here in the US.

Noomi Rapace, a Swedish actress, played Lisabeth Salander. She was incredible in the role. If you have read the books and not seen the films, you need to do so. As is usual, the films cut some things out to compress the story. The US version (English) keeps to the book more closely. But Mara Rooney is no Lisabeth Salander. Plus, it's only the first book. The Swedish version has all three and they're available on DVD and Rapace is perfect as Salander. Oscar worthy performance -- not that the Academy would ever give an award for a role with overt sex. Well, it is Swedish, but it is not too over the top.

Highly recommended, if only to see Salander channeled by Noomi Rapace. Incredible! The rest of the cast is good, too.

Happy to see another Larsson fan here.

I don't have cable here in the woods in Western Michigan. But my antenna picks up WGVU from Grand Rapids which broadcasts MHz Worldview 24 hours on one of their sub channels. MHz broadcasts international news during the day from all over the globe. At night they broadcast international mystery. One of my favorites last year was the Swedish Wallender series with Krister Henriksson as Kurt Wallander. I confess that I never saw the PBS version with Kenneth Branaugh because MHz was broadcasting the Swedish series with Henriksson at the same time.

What's amazing is that the same production company did both the Swedish and English Wallander series, and both the Swedish and English Larsson Millenium trilogy, although the English version will likely not ever be complete.

Later this year Branaugh returns as Wallander on PBS and I am looking forward to it. It is still filmed on location in Ystad, on the south coast of Sweden by the same production company. I am going to order the Henning Mankell novels from my local bookseller in order. The Swedish films were so damned good that the novels just have to be top drawer. (mixing cultural metaphors)

I sometimes use the screen name Duchess of Gadsden, although not here on DU.

I, like many here, grew up quite poor. My father was an alcoholic who became more abusive over time. In 1962, when I was 14, my mom packed up us five kids (the oldest had left home, was in the army) and moved us from northern New York State to Tucson, Arizona. To get away from my dad and the winters.

It was the best thing she could ever have done for us.

She was a nurse, and back then nurses didn't earn a lot of money. She made not a lot more than minimum wage, and with five children ages 7 to 15, it was an incredible struggle. Welfare as we currently know it simply didn't exist back then. I wish it had.

In the spring of my sophomore year of high school, I got a Saturday babysitting job. One morning during the morning announcements this job was announced, and that any student interested should go to the office and sign up. By the time I could get to the office, I was about the fourth or fifth person to sign the list, so I figured I didn't have a chance of getting the job. To my surprise, that afternoon I got a not asking me to go to the office, and I was given the job. What I didn't fully understand (but have figured out since) was that the school was very aware of my family's financial situation. Earlier that year they had, unasked, scholarshipped the cost of our text books.

Anyway, the job paid all of three dollars for the day, which even then was somewhat below the going rate for babysitters. It was an all day job. In the late afternoon, when the parents came home, the mom would drive me home, and most of the time I'd ask if she'd please stop at a grocery store so I could go in and buy groceries for the family. It was clear that she was astonished I'd do that rather than keep the money for myself. But I could not imagine doing anything else. My three dollars each week meant we didn't go hungry over the weekend.

The main upside for me about this relative poverty as I was growing up was that I don't squander very much money. Yes, like anyone there are things I love to spend my money on when I have it. I love to buy books, to go to the movies, and most especially to travel. But I can go to the library. I have Netflix. I can read books. I can afford to pay my mortgage and my bills, to buy sufficient food.

I have in the past been close enough to the edge that I get enraged when I hear about "Welfare Queens" of people gaming the system. Yeah, some people do game the system, but they are vastly outnumbered by those who can't even get by.

Several years ago I worked for a while for an attorney who did Social Security Disability appeals cases. Meaning, if someone had been turned down the first time for SSD, she'd take the case if and only if she felt it was a good one. What I was most struck by was how every single one of these people said over and over they'd rather be working, and how very little they got even when they won their cases.

And this isn't even beginning to touch on the corporate welfare, or all those wealthy people who offshore their money.

Please review the posts on the FaceBook page for "Duchess St. Rollins", and those in this thread. This individual is posting disrespectful, denegrating, stereotyping, profanity-ridden rants on Conservative blogs, web sites, etc.. and is a self-admitted "troll". Her rant posts are being reproduced widely, including by this poster. The "Duchess" created the FB account recently, on July 17, 2012. I have evidence that this individual even deletes posts and blocks accounts of people who post respectful responses to her vitriolic rants. I do not believe that reproducing these posts on Democratic Underground is appropriate use of this site. I am a university academic, an active member in my local Democratic party, and I have been a regular participant in liberal local, county, state, and national political activities. Thank you.

If you have some kind of evidence that this person could be harmful to DU you should present it to admin. Outside that I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Are you offended at the language used? DU'ers often use coarse language. I'm actually a little offended that you said you're a university academic--as if you're too good to be around bad language. I wish you would have further explained why you felt the need to mention that tid bit in your explanation. I'm voting to leave, again, if you have evidence that this person is trolling us, please present it to admin.

To the person who said I banned them, yes, I did. The reason is that you SPAMMED that exact same message all over my page, not that I owe you an explanation. If you don't like what I do, fine, I understand that it's not for everyone. But, don't act like a baby when you're blocked for being extremely annoying.

Actually, for my late mother who died June 1. Single mom, my little brother and I were raised by her. Not on unemployment, but was paid shitty wages (this was the 70s, and women had it even worse then.). We got some govt. assistance, and I received Pell Grants to go to college (thank God, making my life much better). I remember it being 2 or 3 in the morning, and I could hear my mom in the kitchen of our very small, crappy house, crying her eyes out. We had nothing, and there were times we were lucky to have food.

When I see rants like that Teabagger made, I just get filled with rage! Fuckers! Do they have any idea how hard it can be for some people? A total lack of empathy. And they call themselves Christians.

Anyway, thanks for that post on Facebook. Like I said, it really hit home for me when you mentioned the mother in your last paragraph. Because of my experiences, I can never, ever vote Republican.
