this isn't a democracy, it is a Republic. Having the numbers on a national scale mean little because of the Senate and the Electoral College... and those two institutions control SCOTUS (Senate approvals of nominees of the President elected by the College).

I'm sure our founding fathers meant well when they set up these institutions... but I am just as sure they never imagined that a nation could be so far out of whack with what the majority wants that the Senate would be representative of a minority of the population or that a President who was soundly beaten in the popular vote would never the less be installed as our President.
