After being away from SoCal for a lot of years, I'm still rusty on the geography--even after being back for 12 years.

We had one here when I was in grade school and I slept through it. There was another about a year ago and I didn't feel a thing.

Stay safe out there

but when I was living in northeastern BC there was an 8-point something in Alaska that we felt very strongly. I was totally not expecting to feel an earthquake where we lived, so at first I thought it was my daughter pushing on my chair and rocking it. I was pregnant and felt like I was going to barf so I told my daughter to stop pushing on my chair. Turns out she wasn't. I had a brief moment of panic where I thought, "am I having a stroke? What's wrong with me? Why do I feel like I'm tilting?" when my (now ex) husband yelled from downstairs, "Hey! Do you feel that? I think it's an earthquake!" Right away I was relieved and we stumbled into the living room to see what was going on. The forest behind us was dancing. The trees were bending so much I thought they would snap. I could hardly stand up. It just feels like you are on a boat in rolling seas. It went on for a good 2-3 minutes. Pots and pans and plants hanging from the ceiling were all swinging violently. It didn't feel like anything I thought an earthquake would feel like and I'd prefer to never feel one again. I'm much further from Alaska now and in an area that gets almost no earthquakes. I like it that way.

Moderate earthquake shakes Los Angeles area

(AP) – 6 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A moderate earthquake gave a late-night jolt to the Los Angeles area, but no damages or injuries were reported.

A preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.4 quake hit at 11:23 p.m. Tuesday and was centered two miles east of Yorba Linda in northern Orange County, which is about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

The quick shock of a quake was felt throughout the region. A survey report says a 2.7-magnitude aftershock followed less than a minute later.

Police and fire officials in Orange County say they have received no reports of damage or injuries.

30. 4.x? A common occurrence in SoCal

I lived there for a little over ten years. We'd feel tremblers regularly, most in the 3.x approaching 4.x strength. They'd happen all the time.

The one that really scared me was the 7.2 out in the Mojave. I was at my in-laws house with my wife, Alice. At about 2AM we both awoke and the whole place was shaking in a gentle back and forth rhythm. You could hear things moving throughout the house (a large mobile home). It went on for upwards of more than a half minute. Alice and I were discussing whether we had ever experienced an earthquake this long before. We both agreed we had not and she lived in SoCal all her life. And the fucking thing was still shaking!

The damned thing did damage, but it was centered way out in the desert. An Amtrak train derailed, though. Nobody hurt. Many people rattled.

But, damn! That was scary. It went on and on and on.
