And so they know I'll be coming in, probably to buy a new phone, and there they will get me with the much reduced price on the phone in exchange for a contract for the over priced service required to actually pay for the phone.

when I want a cell phone I buy an inexpensive one and by $20 200 minute cards. It sure keeps the cost down.

.... at least that's what mine does. I've run out of contract many times since I only get a new phone every 4-5 years. They just keep the service going. When I go in to get a new phone they do the 2 year thing again. Doesn't mean much to me, as I've had the same AT&T account since I first got a cell phone 15+ years ago.
