According to Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo....
(Snips)
Its easy to see President Trumps tweet today, which says Jeff Sessions should fire Bob Mueller, as yet more of the cacophony of mania and aggression that spews forth from his Twitter account daily like water flowing over a waterfall. But I fear that may not be the case. President Trump has criticized Jeff Sessions many times. His anger at him is notorious. But I dont think he has ever so clearly in public told Sessions to fire Mueller or given him such a specific cause for doing so. I do not think this is an accident or a random escalation.
Regardless, its definitely something. Something new. Some dramatically escalating threat. How can we know this? We cant know it as a matter of fact. But all the history of this case suggests this kind of direct cause and effect.
I think we should be prepared for the President to fire Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein in order to claw his way toward either finding someone who will fire Mueller or simply doing the job himself something I suspect, constitutionally, he can do.

(5,268 posts)according to commentators on MSNBC. WH lawyer McGahn refused to carry out Trump's order a year ago to fire Sessions. The WH lawyers know that would clearly be obstruction of justice.
But really, firing Mueller means less than it did even a few weeks ago. The Machine is real and large and moving forward, and all the kabuki histrionics and threats mean nothing to it.
However, 'burn it all down' is still possible down the road, I suppose. Firing Mueller and stopping the investigation altogether will mean that we live in a pure Gangsterocracy, in which there are no rules or laws, much less rule of law. And a strongman politics takeover of the US means the end of the US, period -- full Walking Dead city-state stuff, soldier against soldier, citizen against citizen. We'll be invadable by anyone at that point, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Russian paratroopers just like in Red Dawn.
I suspect the 'burn it all down' crew is way, wayyyy overestimating their chances of survival. They're Dreamers, not Doers. Starry-eyed Pathetics who will insist they're winning all the way to their inevitable dirt nap.
Either way, there's no reality in which MAGA rules the nation with an iron hand while the whimpy liberals surrender their supplies and women to the Victorious Incels. Chaos would rule, and those guns will matter until the ammo runs out or the guns get coopted by the most dangerous weapon -- the human brain, which these FUCKING IDIOTS also dream they have but do not.
A dark part of me wants to settle this out once and for all. The better part of me is holding out that the US is resilient enough to survive the Russian Nazi sneak attack.
Sigh.

(3,537 posts)"..surprised to see Russian paratroopers just like in Red Dawn.", America is not Russia - there are ways too many Americans with guns and that apple core streak of violence ingrained. Giving Americans free targets to shoot at - would probably make Russia long for their past Afghanistan war.

(7,389 posts)I doubt it as well, just idle speculation. Nonetheless, it's clear that most Republicans support a monarchy now. 55% want the midterms suspended, and 40% are okay with Russian interference.
If the Russians were landing, they'd be there to help out their Komrades the GOP, and likely welcomed at that point -- because just like now, electorally or militarily, they're doomed without outside help.

(3,400 posts)What study shows 55% of Republicans want to cancel the mid-terms. That's a big number!

(7,389 posts)But that's what it said. 55%. Suspend or cancel the midterm elections altogether.
I did read in the comments that the GOP is shrinking drastically, so the support numbers for Trump and the 40% 'Let Russia Rule Us' are indicative of a distilled core.
Yeah, it shocked me too. However, such things are historically common -- once a Bad Actor gains power, people gravitate towards the power center. Until -- Collapse. Devastation. Chaos. Humans are animals, and these subroutines have been repeating since we were lizards.

(7,389 posts)"Moreover, 52 percent said that they would support postponing the 2020 election, and 56 percent said they would do so if both Trump and Republicans in Congress proposed this."
The numbers I saw in the Kos post about the midterms reflected this sentiment in very similar numbers.
They don't like this pesky democracy thing. They never have.
They want an American familial monarchy.

(37,648 posts)Trump's thinking: If I want something done, I gotta do it myself. Because everything I do is great. I get things done! I'll direct Sessions to do it. If he doesn't, I start taking control of this out of control Witch Hunt, and END IT HERE AND NOW!!! My supporters will thank me! It's for the country!
