Chesapeake Bay Foundation study refutes 'job-killer' myth

The old chestnut that environmental regulations kill jobs is a rotten one, according to a review of economic studies released Tuesday by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The argument that tougher standards kill jobs is perennially rolled out by industries as diverse as car manufacturers and farmers.

The report cites U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that show “less than two-tenths of one percent of all layoffs in the U.S. are caused by government regulations.”

Job losses are “much more often caused by mechanization, globalization or other factors,” according to the report.

Jobs created by environmental regulations are often a result of innovations in private industry spurred by those regulations, Baker noted
