Romney's problem in a nutshell

Romney's choice: Make extremist base happy or lose key voters

There is this:

New Romney Ad: Obama Declared ‘War On Religion’

The latest ad from the Romney campaign and RNC Thursday morning reaches out to religious and particularly Catholic voters by decrying Obama’s “war on religion.” Though the ad never mentions contraception, the ad references the mandatory contraception coverage requirement of ‘Obamacare’ that Republicans tried to repeal earlier this year on the grounds that the mandate was a violation of religious freedom.

“Who shares your values?” the narrator asks. “President Obama used his healthcare plan to declare war on religion, forcing religious institutions to go against their faith.”

The video then uses Mitt Romney’s trip to Poland where he met with former Polish President Lech Walesa and praised the late Pope John Paul II.

“(I)n 1979, a son of Poland, Pope John Paul II, spoke words that would bring down an empire….’Be not afraid’” Romney said. The narrator finishes the ad: “When religious freedom is threatened, who do you want to stand with?”

And then there is this:

President Obama, Mitt Romney Agree: Gay Boy Scouts OK

By Devin Dwyer

President Obama and Mitt Romney have found some new common ground -surprisingly - on an issue of gay rights.

Obama today joined Romney in publicly disagreeing with a controversial ban on gay members of the Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation's largest and most well-known youth development groups.

"The president believes the Boy Scouts is a valuable organization that has helped educate and build character in American boys for more than a century. He also opposes discrimination in all forms, and as such opposes this policy that discriminates on basis of sexual orientation," said White House spokesman Shin Inouye in a statement to the Washington Blade, a LGBT newspaper

It's the first time Obama, who was named honorary president of the Boy Scouts of America in 2009, has publicly taken a position on the issue.

The wingnuts are freaking out. This might put them over the edge given the Romney campaign's health care debacle.

Who shares your values?

I don't recall the Council of Bishops declaring anything President Obama has done as being "immoral", even the contested contraception provision.

But they HAVE praised his efforts with respect to the social safety net.
