Despite all of the horrors associated with the Trump presidency, I believe that we will be in a good place as we approach the fall elections. I'm confident that the Mueller investigation will continue to provide documentation of the gross corruption of the Trump campaign, transition team, and administration. This will include the closely related Southern District of New York's case against Michael Cohen. I think that the current political environment provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Democrats to make significant progress at the state and national levels.
There have been a number of interesting though at times acrimonious discussions about various types of Democrats on this forum in recent weeks. I tend to self-identify as a Kennedy Democrat, and still wear the tie clip that Robert F. Kennedy handed out on the steps of the Chenango County Courthouse steps back in 1964, during his campaign for Senate. However, at this point in time, I think it is essential that we drop everything but Democrat. We need to kick it into higher gear, and work together to elect all of the Democratic candidates.
I have two invitations, one for tomorrow and another for the middle of next week, to meet with candida I've been asked to help attract the support of the Democratic Left (progressives independents). In this tes and their campaign leaders for two state offices. Though I am not in either candidate's district, region of the state, there are more independent voters than registered Democrats, making it necessary to unite the tribes in order to achieve victories. This approach allowed local Democrats to achieve unprecedented victories in the past decade.
There are three candidates in NYS districts running for seats in the House of Representatives that I am focusing on. I think that the three provide the model necessary to not only maintain our party's strength, but also to expand it. And it is expanded by offering more seats at the table, seats that offer better representation to a wider variety of Democrats. More, the three illustrate the potential strength of unity, versus the self-defeating nature of divisions within the Democratic Party.
The first campaign I have joined and continue to support is that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has brought great excitement to the 2018 elections, by advocating for the progressive change that a large segment of our party wants. There has been some grumbling, including on this forum, about her identifying as a Democratic Socialist. In fact, a few forum members have posted a splattering of anti-Alexandria information on a daily basis. Now that the contested primaries are over, I hope that this divisive activity stops. We need to be united.
On Sunday afternoon, I will be meeting with Anthony Brindisi and his campaign. He is running against Claudia Tenney in NYS's 22nd Congressional District. Some in the RNC are calling this one of the most important contests in the country. Brindisi has a very good chance of unseating Tenney, who is one of the most toxic republicans today. In fact, she is so desperate that it was announced this week that Trump will be coming to Utica on Monday to campaign for her.
This is being organized by none other than Carl Paladino, the chairman of Trump's NYS campaign. This is the same Carl Paladino that ran a failed campaign for governor (among other positions), and who was removed from his local school board for racism. Utica's republican leaders, aware of the the depth of anti-Trump sentiments in the area, pressured Paladino to change the original plans for the Trump rally it has since been announced that it will be a closed meeting of only donors. There was an attempt to keep the time and location secret. That effort failed, and our side will be outside, peacefully protesting against Trump and Tenney.
(I should note that after redistricting, Maurice Hinchey represented the district in Congress. My aunt served as his top aide for many years. Democrats can win this district, especially with a strong candidate like Anthony Brindisi.)
Paladino, of course, is from western NYS. While I do not know if he is a blood relative of Rep. Chris Collins, it is safe to say they are from the same family. Their family businesses have overlapped for decades. Collins was more successful in politics, because he has been slick, while Paladino is a dim-wit. But both are Trump republicans.
By being indicted on federal charges this week, Collins is now damaged goods. Paladino and Collins are convinced that Collins can win re-election in the 27th District by claiming that organized crime does a lot of good for communities. However, although it is beneath the surface, a significant number of republican leaders in the 27th are asking that Collins step aside. They've noted that if Collin accept a nomination for a local position, such as town clerk, their party can legally replace him on the ballot for Congress.
Either way, this creates a great opportunity for the Democratic candidate, Grand Island Town Supervisor Nate McMurray. At this time, McMurray's campaign is in need of grass roots' donations. We can be sure the republican party will be heavily financing Collins or any candidate that might replace him. Thus, I am going to send a donation to his campaign that matches what I donate to Alexandria and Anthony Brindisy. And if others are in a position to help McMurray's campaign, linked to below, it's a much-needed investment in democracy.

(74,752 posts)I think that I'll have a good bit to write about in the next week. I've been communicating with folks in Utica since posting this OP, about plans for the anti-Trump/Tenney rally on Monday afternoon. And I've been providing details to people in our area, and organizing the car-pool to Utica!

(46,166 posts)We haven't lived in NYS for decades. But we don't live most places where we donate. This one meant a lot because Collins is a greedy, hypocritical right winger who still thinks he's privileged enough to keep his seat. Well, we at least want him and the R Party to have to spend more money than any of them ever imagined.
I spend time in the western region every year -- it's where the state Golden Gloves (non-NYC) are held. Plus I have extended family and Seneca friends there. The redistricting there has been as obviously racist as anywhere in the nation. Self-righteous thugs like Collins and Paladino should have no place in government.

(46,166 posts)I didn't know this until I learned it last night when he was a guest on Lawrence O'D's program.
Upstate is gorgeous. I love the Finger Lakes region. Got to visit a friend up there a bunch when they were at Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls way back in the early 70s. This native of NYC always felt like, "Be still my heart!".

(74,752 posts)Good man. I have a lot of respect for him.
I grew up in the suburbs of a tiny hamlet, population > 100, near where three counties come together. It was too crowded for me, so now I live a few miles away, in what once was an even tinier hamlet in the early- to mid-1800s, with a current population of 12. My house was a stage coach station from the late 1700s, until the train came through. My driveway was part of the turnpike to Ithaca. I can see one neighbor's home off in the distance, but I can deal with that!
But it is the campaign season, so I'll be heading out into civilization.
( My younger son is running unopposed for Town Justice of the Peace. Three of the last four, all republicans, were removed for corruption. He'll be the first Democrat to hold that office!)

(46,166 posts)His talents will no doubt shine through the haze of corruption.
Btw Pt.2 - I bet I drove by or very near to your current place when I was driving up to Seneca Falls all those years ago. If I recall right Ithaca was one of the legs of the journey. It used to take me 6 hours and one fresh gas up of my VW Squareback to get up there.
Funny but I used to think the house I grew up in back in Woodhaven was old since it was built around 1908. Silly me.

(8,652 posts)I do similar work with labor unions in Massachusetts. Fortunately, all out Senators and Congressmen are Democrats and it makes our job a lot easier.
We coordinate with a few local unions on some campaigns. I was active in two unions over the decades, and served as vp here for county employees. After retiring, serving on the local school board put me in contact with a couple more. But some of my associates have closer current connections. Restoring the strength of unions is an important activity for Democrats at all levels.
(My older daughter lives and works in Boston. She loves the opportunities there for activism!)

I'm as active here as I can be too. Not like you though.
Praying for a blue wave like this country has never seen before.
I do have a question for you though. Knowing that Republicans are doing nothing to prevent Russia from interfering in our election, can we even have a blue wave? Won't Putin just hack and wreck our wave to put his own candidates in?
Another question, albeit a silly one. Why are all the crooks liars and traitors on the republican side, always? Have they given up trying to control the country through legitimate means, and have they decided the only way to win is to become beholden to the Russians? I mean aren't they afraid of what will happen when Putin calls in his favors?

(74,752 posts)You work. I'm retired. Hence, I have more "free" time to do these things. That's the only difference between you and I, or anyone else here. We're all participants in the historic Blue Wave that will wash corruption away.
Malcolm X often said that "the only stupid question is the one that remains unasked." Thus, both questions you posed are equally valid. Per #1: Yes, there will be interference and cheating. But we will crush them. Trust me on that. As Che wrote, "You must trust me, for I am a mad man, and mad men never lie."
Per #2: We are looking at human bodies that, all too often, do not contain a single drop of good, or conscience, or compassion. They are robots. Machines, just the same as a lawn mower. Men like Putin and Trump are only different, in that they channel the unconscious evil of the pack. The world has experienced the force that is rising again today. But we have the ability to stop it dead in its tracks now, today.

(3,762 posts)One reads the news and it seems hopeless at times. Terribly frightening.
Though from what I have read of Bob Mueller he is not the type to let criminals get away with stealing the country. It's just difficult, from this side of the mid terms, to imagine we will somehow be delivered of the evil that is trump.
What do you think of this supreme court nominee, Kavanaugh? Will we be able to keep him out?
H2O Man
(74,752 posts)that I haven't seen discussed on this forum, but that I think is common knowledge among those familiar with Mr. Mueller, is that he has respe4ct for the office of the president. He knows that Trump is damaging the office -- daily and severely. Yet Trump has to be removed with the degree of care that a top surgeon would use. Otherwise, we will experience a crisis far beyond what is the current state.
Our responsibility now, which coordinates with Mr. Mueller's team, is to elect as many Democrats as possible. It will make the transfer of power take place in a democratic fashion. Which is to say that things are both far worse and far better than most folks realize. Makes for exciting times.

(74,752 posts)Trump likes him, because he supports the unconstitutional concept of a revolutionary presidency. The Koch forces, however, support him because he favors changes to the Constitution that grant corporations limitless power. One is a short-term crisis, the other destroys the nation completely.
If every Democrat -- from the grass roots to DC -- were to focus extreme pressure, we would prevent his being confirmed. If none of us act, he is immediately confirmed. Obviously, the reality will be somewhere in between those two extremes. The only question is where
..hopefully closer to maximum pressure to prevent his confirmation.

I think Independents may break big for Democrats this time around .
