Absurd lie from a guy on C-span this morning, worth mention I think

Sometime early in the second hour this morning a fellow called into the Washington Journal from Montana. He was a Republican and was making his rant about the Affordable Care Act, which he of course called Obamacare. During his tirade he made a statement that was patently false, and he got away with it unchallenged.

What he said was that the word "thimmitude" (sic) was used on page 107 of the Act and that it referred to a requirement for submissive surrender to Islamic rule, and then he went ranting on and on about it as if submission to Islam was the entire purpose of the Law..

I have a reasonably well rounded vocabulary and have done crossword puzzles for decades, if that was a word I'd have run across it by now, but it was a new one for me. Google came to the rescue and I found the correct spelling and something akin to a definition. The word is Dhimmitude (the word seems to have been coined in a speech given in the 1980's) and while it means essentially what the guy said. So having discovered that I decided to go to the Act and see just what it meant in context. Well, the word certainly does not exist in the section the guy indicated or anywhere else in the Act as far as I could find.

And so we have it, another Republican bit of misinformation out out into the public's view. As usual this one went unchallenged - I could not get through on the telephone and I absolutely refuse to use either Twitter or Facebook; Cspan apparently does not respond at all to E-Mails.

Anyway, if you run across this little gem anytime in the future be aware its just another pot of nonsense.

Why do people buy into (and then propagate) this kind of pulled-out-the-ass nonsense? Because it confirms their world-view, which I'm guessing in this guy's case is that Obama is The Kenyan Muslim Socialist.

emails all riled up about the liberal agenda and the anti-christian, pro-drug, anti-gun, homo-loving elitists....

Every time he sent me one I would email back not only to him but everyone on his list the inevitable Snopes post that discredited what ever nonsense was in the original Email.

He got offended and sent me a terse reply saying we are not friends anymore and that why was I being so nasty...

Fucking ass holes.

email is posted and debunked at Snopes.

Nasty racist stuff. I wonder who concocts this crap, it is pretty sophisticated, probably crafted by some high-level scumbag liar like Frank Gaffney or David Horowitz.

I once thought that; but now, I'm convinced that there are a bunch of high school/college kids sitting around in a basement, listening to some really loud music, smoking some really good weed, playing the "How dumb are people? Let's see who can come up with the most outrageously crazy sh!t and post it on-line and see who believes it" game. The first one that gets a Snopes Debunkation wins 1/4 of the pot; but the one whose Debunkation gets the most hits wins the rest of the pot.

$20 buy-in ... Who'se game?

Religious communities with "Dhimmi status" were allowed to enforce their own religious laws in their own courts. It was quite a tolerant system by comparison to other parts of the world at the time.
