Santorum in Iowa: We won't 'make black people's lives better with welfare'

After suggesting that an expansion of Medicare is really just a plot to make voters more "dependent" on Washington, Santorum added: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them other people's money." "I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn their money and provide for themselves and their families," he added. "The best way to do that is to get the manufacturing sector of the economy rolling."

The quote was captured by CBS News cameras. Santorum accused President Barack Obama of wanting more people to be on welfare, so they would be more dependent on the government. It wasn't clear why he singled out black Americans, as there was only one African-American in the room as he spoke. And Iowa's black population is about 2.9 percent, according to the U.S. Census.

My fiance figuratively hit the ceiling when he caught it on the news yesterday. Screaming, and hollering and carrying on and Adria! Adria! How canna he say that! I told him to calm down, he won't be the nominee - he's just trying to get votes.

He told me . . . he didn't feel so bad about voting for Berlusconi after watching this circus act (GOP Primary).

That's how Santorum makes immigrants to the US feel - like the 'old country' make us look like a three ring circus. Berlusconi makes Santorum look like a clown. Go figure!

The likes of Santorum want to bring back the full powers of racism because it makes them feel more powerful.

Probably, but he's doing the dogwhistle that BLACKS are taking money from good, hardworking white people like his voters.

What a POS he is.

I have a fun game I play with devout conservatives. In the midst of a discussion about such things as welfare or health care I ask them what they think the percentage of black people in America is.

They consistantly go for 30% or more. I even had one guess it to be "about 50%", which led me to follow up to ask why she thought we call them minorities.

The real figure is just over 12% which shows just how much right wingers inflate the "problem" through fear. Most of that percentage is concentrated in the deep south BTW, so it's entertaining to witness their disbelief that African Americans are poorly represented to "take over their country", steal their job, or take away their rights.

After learning this they invariable switch to Hispanics and point out how there are sooo many more of them and "we'll be the minority in a couple years". I'm always ready to explain that black people represent the country's largest minority.

Try it sometime, I promise you'll have fun with it.
