When Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearings next month, he will face a united front of Democratic opposition.
He may face no more blistering set of questions than those posed by the senator who sits all the way to the left of the dais, Kamala Harris (D-Calif.).
A year and a half into her first term in office, the Judiciary Committees most junior member is already seen as a potential presidential front-runner.
She has used her perch to insert herself into the debate over major national issues like President Trumps decision to cancel the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and her advisers believe the Kavanaugh hearings will give her another moment to seize the spotlight.
The hearings wont exactly be a coming-out party for Harris, who is already front of mind for many Democratic activists across the country. But they will offer another moment in the limelight that other potential presidential contenders will not have.
I think she finds herself in this moment in time where people are craving leadership, said Debbie Mesloh, president of the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women and a former top aide to Harris when she served as district attorney. She recognizes that leadership is needed now.

I remember she put the fear of God into the Keebler cracker so I'm sure she could do likewise with Kavanaugh.

I hope she gets a chance to ask her questions and follow-ups. She is very gifted, and republicans will try to limit her time.

You know who else signed on to ask Franken to resign? Bernie Sanders and 36 other senators. But I haven't once seen that used against one of the male politicians.

(28,817 posts)If this was Schumer thread I would say the same. I did say exactly the same on a Corey Booker thread.
I said it today because others say only Gillibrand is called out. Not true again.
That was my only statement.

(54,387 posts)Maybe he's big-hearted enough to have forgiven them all, but if he were to hang up on any of those Democratic Senators who urged him to resign, I wouldn't blame him in the slightest. Eight months of radio silence, and they would dare to call him up, not to see how he's doing or apologize for their rash action, but to ask his help in doing what he would have been helping them do all along? That would certainly take more gall than I could ever muster.
