GREENFIELD, N.H. (AP) An attorney who has bedeviled President Donald Trump during the past year over his personal relationships and immigration policies made a presidential pitch of his own to Democratic voters in New Hampshire on Sunday.
Michael Avenatti, who represents adult film actress Stormy Daniels in her case against Trump, told the Hillsborough County Democrats that he was considering matching Trumps confrontational style with his own pugilistic brand in a 2020 presidential run.
When they go low, we hit harder, Avenatti said, modifying a former first lady Michelle Obama slogan.
Avenatti acknowledged that some of the roughly 200 voters at the outdoor barbecue might be thinking, What is some porn lawyer doing here today? But, he added, As you all know, these are anything but usual times.
Democrats today, he said, are fighting for nothing short of the survival of our republic.

(115,695 posts)Why is he campaigning for the presidency when he's got all these important cases to work on?

(6,324 posts)He took the Daniels case to get attention. The actual work of the case is second.
As soon as the issue of children being separated at the border stated taking headlines he jumped into saying he would work those cases, despite having zero immigration law experience. Because it kept him on TV. No mater that raising money for him to travel and work on these diverted money from real immigration attorneys already there doing the work.
When Daniels had a meeting scheduled with Muellers team and Muellers people specifically said they didnt want publicity around it he leaked the plans for the meeting, then jump on media calling Muellers people cowards for cancelling. Because the publicity about a meeting was more important to him than if a meeting actually happened.
Ive been calling this pattern for a long time here. Im amazed people cant see it for what it is.

(115,695 posts)I appreciate the fact that he stirred up the Stormy Daniels situation - it got under Trump's skin and brought some interesting facts to light - but when he started turning up on every single non-Fox cable news show almost every evening for weeks, I got to wondering who was actually doing the difficult, time-consuming grunt work that any lawsuit requires. And then when other stories, notably the refugee crisis, pushed him out of the spotlight he announced he would be helping the refugees. Wait, what about Stormy (whose case hadn't proceeded beyond a few preliminary motions)?
And then he went to NY to try to intervene in the Cohen case, ostensibly to prevent the release of documents relating to Story Daniels, but when the judge told him that because of some NY Bar rules prohibiting lawyers from commenting on cases they're involved in, he couldn't intervene unless he agreed not to comment about Michael Cohen on TV, he withdrew his request to intervene, choosing TV instead. But what about Stormy's documents that he wanted to protect? And now he wants to run for president so he's attending events in Iowa and New Hampshire. But what about Stormy and the refugee children?
Seriously, that guy's 15 minutes of fame expired weeks ago. The last thing we need as a president is yet another media whore with a bloated ego and no government experience.

(62,444 posts)Good question.
The cognitive dissonance didn't even register here with this story:

Michael Cohen initially balked at the idea of buying the silence of a former adult-film star who says she had sex with Donald Trump, but he did an about-face after a video of Mr. Trump talking about groping women became public in October 2016.
The notion that Daniels was looking to cash in on having had sex with Trump, and that she subsequently changed her mind about the agreement after Trump won the election, runs counter to the narrative that Avenatti has constructed around "what is the Daniels case actually about?"
