HA! Morans!

I have googled everywhere, searched everywhere, even here at Free Republic?
The silence is deafening. I have never experienced a greater example of propaganda by omission.

(8,380 posts)I find it offensive. "Girls" don't understand football? "Men" who are "girly" are...what?
I guess I think of all those Freeper people as men.
phylny
(8,380 posts)but calling them "girlymen" makes it sound like there's something to make fun of with either females or less masculine men. It might just be me. Maybe I'm being picky

(32,002 posts)I've heard it before -- calling a man "girly" is meant as an insult. Some athetic coaches call their boys "girls" meaning to demean them. It's insulting and demeaning to girls. You're not being too picky. It's not funny.
hexola
(4,835 posts)Do you think Im complimenting Freepers for their NFL Stance?
Caliman73
(11,738 posts)Hans & Franz were a parody on Schwartzenegger and the body building culture in the 80-90's however, the phrase "girlymen" was their way (however much of a parody it was) to indicate that men who are not hyper masculine or who have "feminine" traits are abnormal.
Think of it this way. When you insult some guy by saying, "You hit/throw/run like a girl", what is the mechanism of the insult? What is the operational word that would/should make that man feel embarrassment?
When my kids do something unethical or selfish I tell them, "you are being a Trump". They say, "don't say that dad, I'm going to share" or whatever I called them out on. Why? Because being compared to Trump is an insult in my family.
When you say, "girlyman" the comparison of a man to a girl is supposed to be the insult. That is what the other respondents were pointing out.
hexola
(4,835 posts)The funny part was Hanz & Franz were the abnormal ones!

(4,835 posts)And mocking a group of people who hate America and everyone who is not white and straight.
Caliman73
(11,738 posts)That was apart from the Hans & Franz reference.
I am analyzing it from the perspective of where the "insult" comes from.
If I say, "That is retarded" or "You're retarded" or similarly, "That is so gay" or like I said in my initial response, "You throw like a girl". I am implying that the object of my attack is "less than" that something is wrong with them and I am doing it by comparing them with a whole class of human beings.
When I was an adolescent, I used "gay" as an insult. My sister, who was best friends with a gay man, who I really grew to like and respect, pointed that out to me and asked me if I meant to insult our friend. That was when I realized that the insult was meant in the comparison.
I worked for many many years with intellectually disabled people and again, realize that when people say, "That/You're retarded" they likely mean that the object of the insult has done something that is not intelligent or a good choice. However, the insult lies in the comparison between a typically functioning person, and a person who is functioning below the typical IQ level. When you realize that the insult is in comparison to an actual person, with challenges, who is just trying to live their life, it changes.
That is the point, that has nothing to do with Hans & Franz, parody, or drama. It has to do with US being aware that language an associations have meaning that affect other people's lives, and then choosing insults that are not based on the innate attributes of groups of people, like women, gay people, or intellectually disabled people.
It makes it more difficult sometimes to insult people when our options are limited, but it is worth it so that we don't disparage a whole segment of the population with our insults.

(4,835 posts)My post was clearly aimed at members of the FreeRepublic website...all of them...men and women.
Have you ever written to NBC to protest Hanz & Franz?
It's far short of calling anyone "gay" or "retarded" - nowhere near as overt - and clearly a reference to a comedy sketch.
It's a known cultural reference - like the Simpson's Nelson "HA HA"
TeamPooka
(24,228 posts)You also claim your post was aimed at freepers but it is posted here at DU, a place where vintage misogyny thrown around casually is not appreciated, it is not posted at freeperville, the "targets" of your barb.
There is a lot of humor from 25-30 years ago that isn't an appropriate cultural reference anymore.
It is clear to me that the complaint voiced and fully explained by others is either beyond your grasp intellectually or you are intentionally provoking the issue with your obstinate responses.
either way. that's why I blocked your ass after this post.

(1,109 posts)It is a stark example of the bubble these folks live in. When Superbowl commercials are 10 bucks a minute maybe then I will believe the pathetic trump boycott is effective.
At worst they are shedding a lot of moronic fans.
Come to think of it, I doubt many of these anecdotal fans are even real. No political stance of any player would make me eschew my Steelers. Pittsburgh for life beotches!
Its about football. Jeesh.

Seriously, I'd like it if all the NFL teams were run like the Packers, the owners are the FANS.
Not some big ego like Jerry Jones.

(1,109 posts)Steelers for life. Matters even less in the preseason. It's football. The toy store of life is sports. Politics or religion don't get into my toy chest.

But seriously....Tom Brady???? A guy his age? *cough*roids*cough.
Ain't even saying it is wrong....but there it is Let he who has eyes see.
Don't try to change me ..the Curtain could devour a child during the coin flip and I would be on board.
Just trying to point out how loyalty to a particular sport or team does not define one morally or politically. Don't let the sons of shit Reps taint all we enjoy by letting them stain it with bullshit.

(7,725 posts)on the weekends? Just never was important to me....like hockey.
GoCubsGo
(32,084 posts)I'd much rather watch hockey, too. And, baseball. I never understood the big attraction to football, let alone understand why people spend entire weekends in front of the TV watching it. The players stand around for eternity. They run for a few seconds and jump on top of each other. Rinse, lather, repeat. I'll take the sports that don't need cheerleaders to make things interesting.

(10,877 posts)Many average NFL regular season games has double that.

(32,084 posts)That I should watch something I have absolutely no interest in watching because it "destroys" a sport I do like in the ratings? Thanks, but no thanks.

(10,877 posts)There is no standing around and boring moments in baseball. LOL
GoCubsGo
(32,084 posts)Why do you get so bent out of shape by people who don't like football? Why so defensive? And, again, what was your point about ratings?
Crutchez_CuiBono
(7,725 posts)Funny how folks tribe up. Even over sports. Hockey has much more talent involved. Baseball has the quiet of golf w the crack of the bat and announcers. ALL of it has too many commercials.
GoCubsGo
(32,084 posts)If I was forced to choose, I would give the edge to hockey, as well. But, it's nice to have baseball waiting when the hockey playoffs end, especially for the calmness. It's good therapy after your hockey team makes a deep playoffs run. I'd say that baseball involves an awful lot of talent, as well. The hand-eye coordination they need is on par with that of a hockey player, as is the strength, speed, and quick-thinking. And, yeah. I agree on the "too many commercials" thing, too.

(65,057 posts)Geez, that was hardly the point of this thread.
The fact is that there are still waiting lists for tickets at several NFL stadiums. And the places with empty seats were places that ALWAYS had empty seats, like Jacksonville, Nashville, Arizona, etc. Ask a Bills fan how easy it is to get tickets directly from the team. Or Bears fans. Or Packers fans.
The NFL is in ZERO financial straits because of the stupid "boycott".
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)But ever since they opened that stadium in Glendale they have had consecutive sellouts especially during the Bush recession. They don't have a waiting list like Denver or Green Bay but they almost always reach the threshold where they aren't blacked out like in the Sun Devil Stadium days.
It is not comparable to Jacksonville who suffered seasons of blackouts which hurts ticket sales. It is why Arizona had trouble selling tickets because they were blacked out all the time.
I bought tickets to the Seattle game weeks in advance myself. Never been there but now I have a car so I can make the trip.
ProfessorGAC
(65,057 posts)There were Bears tickets available at the tail end of the last couple seasons here, because they were awful and we had early winters. So season ticket holders were selling off at face value.
But, if they are worth a darn, it's nearly impossible to get those tickets without paying a huge added margin.
