(36,444 posts)There are twenty-five in Northern California. There might have expanded nationally, but they process their own beef, and it's never frozen, so they built around their core meat processing facilities.
The first one in Northern California opened up down the road from me, and my neighbor, a native of Pasadena, swore by it. I visited it, and, well, I simply wasn't impressed, "What's the big deal?".
Hell, even Huell Howser's visit didn't sway my opinion:

(19,565 posts)I tried them once and was all... eh? It's a fast food burger and not as good as others I've had elsewhere.
To be fair, Austin has a lot of transplants from the West coast. It might be a niche market thing?

(7,300 posts)A greasy burger is a greasy burger and both are overrated and over priced. In N Out gets that nod by a hair due to their beef but don't let that be mistaken for an endorsement.

I don't eat meat anymore but I used to love me a mean hamburger piled high.
Yeah, who speaks better for what you like to eat than your own taste buds.

(36,444 posts)Their altered bumper sticker spread the word fast. There were just enough joints to service the whole area, yet rare enough to make it a destination stop. When they expanded, they simply diluted the brand, and turned it into just another quick food joint.
Here's hoping Randy's Donuts, the ultimate LA fast food icon, doesn't expand. Visiting it is on my bucket list.

(36,444 posts)two blocks away from Randy's Donuts. Roscoe's became an icon spot after Obama visited the West LA location (Not far from Fox Studios).
I ate at that one and all I ran into was Charlie Sheen. Charlie really liked my son's Penguin sweater, and liked it even more when he laughed and told Charlie he scored it in a thrift store. I wasn't into talking LA fashions so I went outside to check out Charlie's ride, a late nineties Maybach.

And, there's President Obama with Roscoe! Cool
My sister's grandson's 4th Birthday was catered by Roscoe's in Griffith Park July 27, 2018! Fancy!

(14,565 posts)I've posted it on countless sites. Should be called Minuscule N Mediocre.
Hard to believe it has a cult following. I'm seldom convinced they have actually eaten there, as opposed to yearning for peer acceptance.
The help is good. I'll give them that. The chain obviously emphasizes friendly and smiling if often robotic employees. Wind them up.
Appreciate the thread. I normally succumb to stupidity every 5 years or so and eat there. Last was Lake Havasu in spring 2013, within sight of London Bridge.
Never again

We go every once in a while, but to this day, I don't understand why people sit in their cars and wait for a half-hour to get food when they can walk right in and have it in 10 mins.

AFAIK they dont force their beliefs on their employees or customers. Unlike what Jesus-Pleasers like Pence want to do.

ON EDIT: I got a reply that changes things from my original post below. They said they give equally to Democratic and Republican candidates. I saw an article elsewhere where a reporter fact-checked and apparently this is true.
After reading that In n Out has made major contributions to CA Republican candidates, I have lost my appetite for your food. My family and I have regularly eaten there for years but no more. The GOP is destroying America, supporting a traitorous president who has conspired with Russia, thrown children into cages, and Congress wants to weaken Social Security, hurt the poor and take healthcare away. They are polluting our planet and threatening our children by denying climate change. Shame on you for using our burger dollars spent there to hurt so many people! I will never eat your food again unless you ask for your money back from the GOP and refrain from political donations, unless it's to candidates who actually work to help people, not hurt them. Or do you only care about helping millionaires and white people?

(37,161 posts)Best part of all: If anything is off, I can freely heap scorn on the chef for his incompetence.
Funny you should mention it that way. Just tonight I chewed the chef, myself, out for royally messing up the mashed potatoes. I thought they were boiled, through & through; they werent! 😢🤪

(31,261 posts)A cook has to be patient with food like spaghetti and insure that portions and amount of water are consistent. That is where I often fail due to my changing portion needs.
When I prepare my spaghetti sauce its an all day affair. I add my tomato paste, diced tomatoes, green peppers, diced onions, ground chuck/sausage & oregano, with a half cup of sugar. I then simmer it all day. Not to brag but everyone absolutely loves my spaghetti sauce! 😍😘
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)If you do use wine, do you use a light red, deep red, dessert red? How do you thicken it, simmer down or add thickener like flour?
I have tried making spaghetti sauce before, I really stink at that aspect of cooking (the noodles come close though).
GWC58
(2,678 posts)Never tried that one! Youve given me an idea. Thank you!! 👍🏻 I guess I cheat, if you want to call it that. I use Ragu sauce, regular. I then add my own mixes to make, sort of, my own. Hours of simmering is the key, at least for me. My son, Mr. Fussy, likes it. Ill ask Matthew do you like the sauce? and he always says Dad your sauce is always fantastic. Makes me feel good. But tonight he let me know my mashed potatoes were less than stellar. If it aint good your kid will let you know! 🤯
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)I haven't gotten it right. I have used Cabernet Sauvignon, Portugese Port and both produced a bitter, ugly dark sauce regardless of what I tried, even adding brown sugar. I have considered using a sweet red, but have been focused more on other sauces when I cook. I use a jar spaghetti sauce like you start with, typically Ragu or watered down then simmered Prego, Prego straight up is to hard on my stomach.
GWC58
(2,678 posts)the ultimate spaghetti sauce. Keep working at it, youll get it. And youre probably way better making mashed potatoes than am I. Believe me coming across bits of undone potato bits in mashed potatoes is throw em away worthy. And thats just what I did; threw em away. But Stove Top brand stuffing mix worked in a pinch. LOL!!

(38,436 posts)A company can donate to whatever cause it wants to donate to..
And people can choose not to purchase at that company for whatever reason that they want. It really is that simple. Also, in an industry with lots of competition, it is easy to for people to switch brands. In and Out made a very stupid decision. That company could loose 30 percent of its business almost over night. Maybe more. Who knows.

(53,061 posts)But metrics for a CEO would be revenue growth, employee turnover, return on investment and on those grounds she has surprised everyone in the industry by not only keeping it private but taking sole ownership when ahe was 30.
Doesnt reflect on her other qualities which is reflected in her 4 marriages before she reached 40. I believe her father died at 44 after multiple overdoses.
The ironic point was that these are very intelligent and highly functional people who say Jesus has solved their problems but have disastrous personal lives.

(12,660 posts)$30K for the 2018 election cycle, and $50K for the 2016 election cycle to the Democratic PAC - Californians for Jobs and a Strong Economy.
The only difference is that they donated directly to the California GOP, but indirectly to the California Democratic Party via a California business PAC that supports Democratic politicians.
It may be a religious or ideological issue - hell, maybe they were faked out by the PAC name and did it inadvertently - but they still donated to Dems.
They make multiple donations for the tax write-off and to be able to get a foot in the political door for when they need it, as does pretty much every other fast food organization.
As it is, I'm not surprised they give to republicans.
Successful fast food chains tend to have started out as more conservative-minded "family businesses".
