Well, not just petty crime.
I have lived in Kansas City North since 1975. It has always been a pretty safe area. Not any more.
We have been deluged with small business robberies, car break ins, car abd truck thefts, house break ins.
People have films from home security cameras. These are white teens that look like high school age. They go out about 2 am and just nonchalantly walk up people's driveways and try all the car doors. They steal whatever they can. And tons of cars, trucks and trailers have been stolen.
I am wondering if the Trump mentality of not respecting any laws has filtered down into our neighborhoods.

(4,517 posts)I think the rise in crime has more to do with the opioid epidemic. But sure, that can be put on Trump too, since he is doing nothing about it.

(20,875 posts)Just last night I went to bring a rug from Persia I've had for years. I washed it with my new $88 rug shampoo machine (far better job than those places that charge you $150+ for a 45 min. job). It was still a bit wet so I hug it outside to dry while it was still light outside.
I spied my neighbor across the street. He said, "Good idea! I've been hit twice this week! The gas in my truck has been stolen!".
We've never had a lot of crime where I live which is a middle-class neighborhood for the most part. You don't have to go far to reach the part of this area that is poor however.
Who is doing the stealing? They blame in on drug addicts. Not sure about that as they have yet to catch anyone and convict them. Anyone that needs to steal gasoline must be in need of it I'd think. Maybe it is one of the many people around here that needed the gasoline for the car they are living in? The number of people living in vehicles has gone way up!
Sad situation at best!

(10,014 posts)Crime like that has many causes: poverty, opportunity, youth, drugs, etc.
In our neighborhood in the 1970's it was a single guy who broke into over 175 homes and vehicles, the police department had to hire another officer just to handle it. The crime rate went to practically nothing once he went to caught.

(20,875 posts)The guy with the gasoline stolen from his truck has been hit several times, here never!
This guy w/the truck was actually chasing the culprits in the middle of the night with a loaded gun! He did not catch them but he tells everyone about his guns. They keep coming back to his house (across the street!) to steal and taunt him it seems.
No guns in this household = no crime.

(4,723 posts)As drug use has grown, crime is skyrocketing, crimes rates are too. Sadly, too many locals are in denial and act all surprised and defensive that the city is fast becoming a cesspit. Major roads that 15 or 20 years ago that were lined with good local businesses are empty or host matress stores, ripoff loans and cellphone places. This trend was happening before Trump., but it certainly hasn't improved. However, just plain incivility is much worse now than ever. People are just meaner in the last couple of years.

(18,868 posts)to see who can steal the most stuff.
It is different kids on the films but they are all about the same age. They carry backpacks to put their stuff in. They drive diwn the street w/o lights on and then walk up driveways and ck all the car doors.
Not a good idea to leave garage door openers in the car.
Niw the car thieves might be a different bunch. They seem to know what they are doing.
