It's time to reconsider low-dairy diets, new study suggests
Cheese and yogurt were found to protect against death from any cause, and also against death from cerebrovascular causes, like stroke.
Nutritional guidelines often recommend a low-fat diet, despite a lack of consensus among medical experts as to whether a low-fat diet is beneficial to heart health. This means that dairy products, with their relatively high fat content, are on the "eat sparingly" list.
But new research, presented Tuesday at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology, suggests that the current advice to limit dairy intake should be reconsidered, especially for those who consume yogurt and cheese as opposed to milk.
The consumption of dairy products has long been thought to increase the risk of death, particularly from coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and cancer, because of dairys relatively high levels of saturated fat," the society said in a news release. "Yet evidence for any such link, especially among U.S. adults, is inconsistent.
Whole milk still appears to increase the risk of heart disease, although the study authors did not quantify how great the increase was. But most other dairy products, especially cheese and yogurt, were found to protect against both total mortality death from any cause and mortality from cerebrovascular causes.

It very well could be warm brie on crostini.

I usually bake a cheese, potato and veggie casserole for Christmas dinner, but I don't make Mac and cheese that often.

As an aside I swear the Food Network is owned by big pharma. Those Carnival treats will kill you.

(15,805 posts)I add a little salt, pepper and garlic, and sometimes mix in a little minced green or purple onions, jalapenos, olives, capers, or fresh herbs... tummy yummy! Makes me drool just thinking about it. Gotta go shopping and make a batch this weekend.

I don't drink much milk. I get my calcium from Greek yogurt, cheese, and Romaine lettuce.

(14,565 posts)I despise the sight, the smell, the taste and even the knowledge that it exists.
I can't imagine anyone tolerates it, let alone actually likes it.
As I posted in the Lounge a few months ago, if I had a choice of eliminating either Donald Trump or cheese from the planet, I suppose I'd pick Donald Trump, but not without considerable trembling and second guessing. It would be almost inconceivable to pass up an opportunity to get rid of such a ghastly element.
Anyone who asks, "Would you like cheese on that?" should be automatically hoisted to the rafters with their head smacking on a sharply pointed ceiling. And then the cord cut to a deserved applause-accompanying plop to the ground.
Then a repeat, just in case the lesson wasn't learned the first time.
Followed by large spiked boots to the back.
However, I like greek yogurt and have some every night, mixing in some organic flaxseed meal. So I'll be happy with that.

11. Some Types of Cheese
Although most types of cheese are fermented, it does not mean that all of them contain probiotics.
Therefore, it is important to look for live and active cultures on the food labels.
The good bacteria survive the aging process in some cheeses, including Gouda, mozzarella, cheddar and cottage cheese (35, 36).
Cheese is highly nutritious and a very good source of protein. It is also rich in important vitamins and minerals, including calcium, vitamin B12, phosphorus and selenium (37).

I was looking for alternative sources for probiotics. Kefir is another one they recommended and I may try it.

(34,136 posts)Most are fermented so I guess whatever provides the fermentation in those things is considered a probiotic.
