How McCain is portrayed last week and this week is how he will be remembered. I know how this works. Why we are painting him as we are is beyond me. It's very disrespectful, in my opinion. Whitewashing history sucks.

(4,642 posts)about celebrating JM's death. I'm not a fan of McCain the republican but I respect his pre politician service before he went to the dark side. But, being freed from the constraints of fascism at the very end he did stop the fascists from killing ACA. For that, he gets a pass.

(24,122 posts)To argue that mourning the deaths of innocent people who died due to the mean-spirited, indeed, evil policies promoted by Sen. McCain is celebrating HIS death is beyond ridiculous.

(21,636 posts)Besides, he did stop Cheeto and Bitchy Mitchy from repealing Obamacare outright last year.
There was also McCain-Feingold - the first real attempt at pulling our campaign finance system out of the third-world style opaqueness and corruption it's been mired in for so many years. It would still be the law of the land, of course, had it not been for Citizens United.
So while there's much to criticize in his record, he was on our side a good number of times.
He was no maverick - but he was a really decent man compared to most of today's Republicans. Just imagine what his successor will probably be like!

(8,311 posts)I admit a week is a long time -- according to some, long enough to create a universe AND have a day of rest -- but you're harshing the mellow of this wonderful mix of self-righteousness and schadenfreude I've got going on watching Democrats able to muster a few kind words while Republicans thoroughly embarrass themselves trashing him. Some Rs started while his heart was still beating its last, others while he was still warm... saying shit they'd have had apoplexy over if we'd said in the 2008 election.
After all, what's the point of pissing on a grave before they're in it?
InAbLuEsTaTe
(24,122 posts)moriah
(8,311 posts)... we have. One of which is just that it Isn't Done to speak ill of the freshly dead.
And when I asked what the difference was -- I knew they'd talked all sorts of shit about long-dead relatives, and I was young but still old enough to know at least one person making nice at the funeral we'd all just attended hated the deceased's guts and was shocked to see her there, and not even the complicated love/hate thing that can happen with relatives -- my sassy older cousin piped up with:
Cousin: "Oh, honey, she's just being polite. After all, what's the point of pissing on an empty grave? She knows his mom is hurting."
Me: "But why'd she even come?"
Cousin: "How'd else could she know for sure which grave was his later?"
Everyone roared, but by this time he *was* in the ground.

(2,872 posts)"McCain was not, generally speaking, a man of strong beliefs. One of the most honest things he ever said was that he didnt run for president to enact reforms or out of some grand sense of patriotism, but simply because it had become my ambition to be president. If anything, he often seemed bored by domestic issues, and was even famous after a fashion for reaching across the aisle on matters like campaign finance.
But he did have one unshakeable conviction: Wherever America had a foreign policy problem, the solution was always to bomb the fuck out of someone."

McCain ventured and risk far more the pious who can sit back wrapped in a cloak of sanctimonious self rightousness throw down the thunderbolts of condemnation that fizzle like a muffled fart in a wind storm. The silence of my parting with stand in stark contrast that of John McCain's whose life is a testimony to the troubled world that none would wish to inherit. I can only say that if faced with his challenges, I can hope that I had the fortitude to persevere as he demonstrated.

(6,280 posts).... really are disgusting. They may hate Senator McCain and they may not respect him, but one would think that they would have enough class to respect fellow Democrats who choose to acknowledge John McCain's passing with respect and some admiration. Expressing hatred for John McCain while disrespecting fellow Democrats? That's a step beyond disgusting.

(6,280 posts)What bullshit. Those hate-filled posts absolutely disrespected those Democrats who participated in this thread in order to show a little respect at the passing of Senator McCain.
