There have been a lot of discussions about President Donald Trump firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions lately. Its not just that Trump has been publicly attacking Sessions, because that is nothing new. Hes been doing that almost from the beginning of his presidency, ever since Sessions decided to recuse himself from the Russia investigation.
So its true that Trump is upset with Sessions for not working as his personal lawyer and trying to protect him from criminal probes.
<snip>
Heres why:
1. The firing of Sessions would create a political and media firestorm the likes of which has not been seen in Washington during Trumps presidency. There would be charges of corruption and obstruction and foul play that would dominate media coverage for weeks.
2. During the midterm election season it would detract and distract from the GOP message on the economy that it wants voters to focus on when deciding which party to vote for.
3. If Sessions leaves there would be no new Attorney General for the rest of Trumps time in office, because the Senate would not confirm someone that fast. Instead, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who has been very supportive of the Trump Russia investigation would be promoted to the role of Acting Attorney General. Thats the last thing Trump needs. (There is an interesting article in todays Washington Post which discusses this issue in more detail.)
4. Firing Sessions may result in him making a plea bargain with Mueller against Trump. Sessions clearly has no interest in protecting Trump, and we know from his recusal he is looking out for his own interests first. Mueller would love to get cooperation from Sessions, and in fact he may have already interviewed him. If Trump cuts Sessions loose, then the Attorney General is free to testify against the president. Most people think Sessions has been a witness to every crime Trump has committed while in office, and also has inside information on the Trump-Russia election scandal. - PoliticusUSA
On the third point, tЯump would need to massacre DoJ, Nixonian-like, dual firing Sessions and Rosenstein at once.
The Яepublican clown car just keeps producing more and more craziness.

(22,670 posts)I think we all know how crazed republicans have drifted from norms by this stage. They don't even realize what they've become; a cool-aid drinking cult.

(14,492 posts)Yes, and like all cults the people are kept cocooned in a protective bubble and warned of the dangers of stepping "outside". As we're seeing with Sessions, they will also turn on their own when one threatens the security of the cult.
America's public right-wing cult could perhaps be attributed to Reagan and surely must now be one of the largest in human history. We've watched it become much more isolated, rabid and viscous since Trump came around. Let's hope it somehow implodes on itself.

(48,955 posts)A hell of a lot of firings at the DOJ could happen in that time frame.

(6,139 posts)sessions is a rasist and belongs nowhere near DOJ anyway.
In fact, firing sessions may cost him some supporters because sessions is a proven conservative, if fact, he was the most conservative senator.

First he would become frozen in time and then little by little he'd flake away.
He would have reached that stage a long time ago if he couldn't do dumb.
As it is, he has fertile ground for doing the dumb. He's found acceptance like never before in appealing to all the other people who do the dumb thing. A mutual admiration society of dumb people doing and saying dumb things, all the while cheering themselves and him for being dumb. A celebration of all things dumb.
