(33 posts)We used this term often in my house, as in a bug is going around or Dads got a stomach bug.

In which case it's a bug (either viral or bacterial) that causes vomiting.
Was it a UK publication or press release?

It's a highly technical term.

It's long enough to acquire, and get sick from, a case of staph enterotoxin.
It's not quite long enough to acquire, and show symptoms of, salmonella.
It's not long enough to acquire, and show symptoms of, a viral URI.
It's not long enough (most likely) to acquire and show symptoms of viral gastroenteritis.
