Rep. Paul Ryan, the GOPs most outspoken advocate for cutting and privatizing Social Security, has already benefited from Social Security himself, in the form of survivor benefits he received after his fathers untimely death.
From the age of 16, when his 55-year-old father died of a heart attack, until he was 18, Ryan received Social Security payments, which, according to a lengthy profile in WI Magazine, he put away for college. The eventual budget czar attended Miami University in Ohio to earn a B.A. in economics and political science, and landed a congressional internship as a junior.
Ryans congressional ascent, all the way to the top spot on the Budget Committee, began with his Social Security-funded college education.

"The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand," Ryan said during a 2005 event honoring Rand in Washington, D.C., the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported in April 2009.
During the 2005 gathering, Ryan told the audience, "Almost every fight we are involved in here on Capitol Hill ... is a fight that usually comes down to one conflict -- individualism versus collectivism." The event was hosted by The Atlas Society, which prominently features a photo of Rand on its website and describes itself as a group that "promotes open Objectivism: the philosophy of reason, achievement, individualism, and freedom."
Ryan also said during a 2003 interview with the Weekly Standard, "I give out 'Atlas Shrugged' as Christmas presents, and I make all my interns read it. Well ... I try to make my interns read it. He noted that he "looked into" Rand's work when he was younger, but reiterated that he is a Christian and reads the Bible often.

(8,170 posts)Then there's his link to the Wisconsin gerrymandering scandal.
Now for rumormongering ...
Of course there's no evidence whatsoever that his opposition to gay rights has anything to do with any doubts he might have about his sexuality.
It would be foolish to suggest that his Catholicism is just a front he maintains and that his open admiration for the aggressively atheist libertine Ayn Rand exposes his true lack of faith.

(57,936 posts)If he was on Social Security at 16 after his father died, how did he pay for his education at Miami University in Ohio as an out-of-state student? And how could he afford a fraternity if he was on Social Security at 15 and out-of-state?
