My cousin and I traveled to the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Vestal, NY, to get copies of Bob Woodward's new book this morning. We arrived around noon. There were several people walking through the parking lot, thumbing through their copies. After picking up several copies for ourselves and relatives, we talked to several clerks, who happily informed us that the book had already set the record for the number sold in a day. The store opens at 10 am and closes at 9 pm, which suggests that lots more have been sold since we left.
This is a Good Thing.
I'm curious how many other people here bought the book, and if their experience was similar to our happy shopping experience?

Substitute lots of stuff for xxx including lie, steal, fuck, covet, etc.
Others might want to use substitutes like: help, work with food shelters/Habitat For Humanity, etc.

This is your response?

(1,343 posts)and got the last book. Haven't started reading it yet -- too worried about blood pressure rising.......
Now today I heard on NPR that Trump is trying to make nice nice with my Prime Minister -- who says no NAFTA deal is preferable to a bad NAFTA deal. Perhaps the incredibly bad press Dolt45 is receiving has made his economic advisors put a bit more pressure on him?

I must say I have enjoyed Woodward's interviews -- especially the one with Stephen Colbert last night. The guy has a sense of humor so dry you could dessicate fruit in its presence. Favorite line, on the interviewer not asking too many questions at once: You just let the silence suck the truth out. (I should have written that down in the moment to make sure I didn't misquote, but I absolutely loved it.)

(58,785 posts)Perfect description.
Just looked: "Let the silence suck out the truth."
Regarding techniques, on another program he described how, after talking for some hours under the "deep background rule" (everything used but without attribution), people will often want to say something "off the record." He says he always refuses, and they usually go ahead with what they wanted to say anyway.
Btw, he said very clearly and definitely today that he was a "radical centrist." Tacked a label right on himself. I was a little surprised, but on looking it does offer a whole lot of latitude.

(46,166 posts)A week ago our local library had 80 requests for the book and 20 copies were on order. Right now the regular print version has 633 requests. As of today they've increased the order to 198 copies.
I switched my request to the large print version and am only 27th in the queue. 12 books have been ordered so I'll read it sooner.
This is why we always vote yes for taxes to increase funding for our Jefferson County, Colorado library system. They're terrific.
Btw, the e-book version hasn't shown up yet but I check the library web site twice a day to see if they have it. I'm sure it'll be available soon.

(62,058 posts)the libraries have a tough time getting rights to the e-books. I don't know why exactly, but even digital can be problematic. I hope your library can manage to get a lot of them.
Good luck!

(28,341 posts)when I arrived after work the shelf was still half full with other reserved copies. The clerk said they had had started with 3 shelves for the reserve books & another 3 with extra copies for customers who came up & asked for the book - there were maybe 10 of those left.
She said "Harry Potter" are the only other books she's seen fly off the shelves like this has.

(8,757 posts)I've had problems w/my Amazon account b/c I was working for an old friend/client and my name and account were mixed up w/her name so I knew it'd be kind of a hassle to get things back on track. I just spent about 20 minutes on the phone, it's straightened out, and the audio version is on it's way! (I normally would go to one of the local bookstores but my new work schedule does not give me that opportunity - just sayin')....Thank you guys....

Wake County, NC. Originally there were 39 copies pre-ordered (I'm # 248 in a line of 734 holds), but they've upped their purchase to 75 copies. So I expect to get a notice in about 3-4 weeks to come pick up the book at the hold desk.

(16,934 posts)....wait so I went to a local bookstore here in Marin County, CA and they were sold out but expecting more tomorrow. I then went today over to see my daughter who attends UC Berkeley and the bookstore there "Moe's Bookstore" on Telegraph ave. had some in stock, but not many and said they were selling fast.
I am still going to get my additional copy from Amazon and give it as a gift to a friend who wants it.
But meanwhile I am already reading the book and can't put it down....probably will be done very soon....

(9,359 posts)By the time my wife and I arrived there at 4 PM yesterday.
I had called this one about 10:05 am, and asked if they could hold a few for me, that I'd be there by noon. The guy said there was no need to, because they had so many on hand. When we got there, it seemed evident that they wouldn't have enough to last to 9 pm.
Will your store get more today or tomorrow? I hope so.

(22,451 posts)I am listening to it on my "ears" - Audible. It paints a picture as stark and terrifying as the cover suggests, of a man so often described here and elsewhere as being completely in the dark about what his job is, and especially the terrifying job those around him do to keep him from committing offhanded acts of destruction. He comes from that toddler like thinking he is invincible and has no idea he is in the dark.
Woodward is presenting it masterfully and fully credibly.
I hear it is sold out everywhere, and Amazon has already back ordered a million copies.

(74,698 posts)I had one of the never-ending medical appointments that I attend these days. (Well, I hope they don't end any time soon, all things considered!) I brought my copy of the book. The doctor saw it, and cracked up laughing. He said that I am addicted to politics. Correct diagnosis. He's a Vietnam veteran, and a moderate republican who often votes for Democrats.
He said he had hoped that somehow, Trump would stabilize, and respect the office he inhabits. But just the parts of Woodward's book he has seen or read about have convinced him that Trump is the national crisis. And he believes Trump has displayed a marked increase in insane behavior since the book and op-ed came out.
I asked if he took comfort in knowing that Pence believes that God is planning for him to take over? I noted that in my years of employment at the mental health clinic, I found those who conversed one-on-one with God were psychotic. He agreed, and said he worries about both Trump and Pence doing severe damage to our nation.
It helps you wrote this - because it means there are some seeds being thrown that are sprouting. Through the fact they are taking hold they will grow and maybe bear fruit with him and others he interacts with. Our hope is our example (carrying the book, willing to talk about it) - to not indicate how stupid their positions are and engage them as equals - and to think ourselves of fertilizer for those seeds.

(3,321 posts)Don't forget the libraries.
I love the libraries around here. I volunteer at the nearest one from time to time.
My older son had ordered it for me to read on a "tablet" (?) he gave me last year. He's put a number of books on it for me. But I wanted a copy where I could highlight certain pages in, for future reference. Old habits die hard, I guess.

(4,689 posts)They gave me a delivery date of September 20. Then, I accidentally canceled the order a couple of days later and immediately reordered. They couldn't even give me an expected delivery date at that point. It still said that yesterday, so when I was in my local Target around noon I bought their next-to-last copy and cancelled my Amazon order. It cost me 3 bucks more, but it was worth it to have in hand now. I haven't had a chance to start reading it yet, but hope to later today.
I have never before seen Amazon unable to estimate the delivery date for a new book on the day of publication. That is unprecedented in my experience.
