(8,204 posts)I originally was planning to evacuate to Charleston, back when it looked like it was gonna hit in the middle of NC.
Then I was planning to evacuate to Florence, back when it looked like it was gonna potentially straddle the coast and head southward to Charleston.
Now I'm planning to evacuate to Columbia, but it looks like it's still gonna go right through that area, even though obviously not as severe as along the coast.
Where can I evacuate to when -- even so close to landfall -- the forecast tracks are varying so much? Short of driving hundreds of miles and multiple states away like FL/TN/WV, where are we supposed to evacuate to?
EDIT: I even thought about NE North Carolina or SE Virginia, but even though they aren't expected to have a direct hit, they have some of the worst rain/flood projections of anywhere......

(8,204 posts)Basically wherever I have planned to go, the storm seems to change direction and wants to head there, lol.
I was leaning on maybe just riding it out, but now that it is projected to actually make landfall right in this area (or a bit south, which would arguably be just as bad since it seems as though being on the northeast side of the storm is just about the worst place to be), I'm leaning more towards evacuating. I have a reservation at a hotel in Columbia tomorrow and was planning to head out early tomorrow morning, if we do decide to evacuate.

(5,042 posts)Preferably a hotel with no trees around it.
These things lose their power swiftly once they hit land. Rain and wind is nothing compared to storm surge.

(9,766 posts)Leave as early as possible. Columbia will have some flooding but nothing like the coast and the hotels will have generators.
Stay safe!

(51,308 posts)Head to the mountains if youre in NC and dont feel safe where you are.
Ive got a generator, lots of food and water. Tree lady coming today to top some of the big ones.
I rode out many a hurricane when I lived in Key West. Fingers crossed.

(6,258 posts)When it goes inland to the mountains, the flash flooding will be deadly. Often more people die in the mountains of NC and VA than along the coast with a typical hurricane. Every major storm is different, but this one is a week long nightmare.
Hugo ripped its way through Charlotte where you are and beyond, Fran wrecked everything from Wilmington through the Triangle, Floyd flooded everywhere east of I-95. Florence could be a equal of all three combined.

(51,308 posts)I dont have to worry about flooding because I live on a hill.
Wilma flooded me in the Keys years ago. Awful.

(31,683 posts)and several days ago I was trying to figure out where to go--if the track continued heading straight for Raleigh even though we're 100 miles inland--and I thought maybe Asheville?
I decided to stay put when it started looking like the projection would be to turn west through SC after coming ashore in NC. Glad I did. Now Asheville looks like it will get more rain than we will here in Raleigh! And I'm in downtown Raleigh where all the power is underground. Don't expect we'll lose power, and if we do, it will be back up quickly since all the state agencies are right downtown.

(10,885 posts)Were I you, I'd drive as far west or south as you can get. Florida is 5 hours or so away, but it's safe in this storm. Whatever you choose, I hope it works out well for you.
My D-in-law packed up the two kids, leaving Summerville SC on Tuesday and headed for Disneyworld. They're out of the storm path, and kids are having a blast. My son stayed behind, which doesn't make Momma happy, but they have a very solid brick house on a knoll on the high side of their road. He wants to be there in case anything immediate needs to be repaired, but he also has the RV packed up if he and the dog need to get out. When they moved there from NY just 8 weeks ago, one of the first things they did was to have a pro come in and cut down a group of pine trees surrounding the house, just for the esthetic value and sunlight. Might be the best decision they made.
Sending heartfelt good wishes to all in Florence's path.
