This is a really, deeply ugly ticket

In fact, it's the ugliest P/VP ticket of my lifetime.

We've got Weasel Romney who believes in nothing but that he somehow deserves to be the most powerful man on earth as well as one of the richest. This is truly a man with a compass that points only to him; who adopts policies only if they benefit him politically and who lies with the greatest of ease.

We've got Paul Ayn Ryan who I think really is a true believer, a zealot who adheres to a "survival of the fittest" philosophy and has no compunction about ruthlessly destroying millions of people. (not that weasel has any compunction about that either).

Neither of these men have a conscience. They both have hatred and contempt for the poor, the disabled and the working class.

I do think President Obama will likely win, but that this ticket should even be put up reflects some very scary stuff about this country.

I don't just want Obama to win, I want the hateful ideology of Ryan and the hollow man rMoney, discredited for all time.

So in that way it's a win-win: angrier white people, distraction from religion landmine. The real risk is that we bludgeon them with Medicare and Social Security among seniors. I don't think they can survive if they lose 5% among seniors because of Ryan. If they want to be ugly, let them be ugly, Obama and the Democrats are beautiful.

I know people who still buy the idea that Mitt is really just a moderate at heart and will govern like a moderate. The Ryan pick should end that idea once and for all.

not. They'll get rich either way. They'll either get super rich, under Obama, or they'll get universally rich, under Romney. They're at the point where they don't even bother hiding anymore, because they found that running on cray-cray for local legislatures, governors, and then federal positions actually worked in some areas, and pulled the attitude of the country toward the right in ways that make it easier for them to become universally rich. They can throw whatever shit at the wall they want, because at the end of the day, some of it sticks. If this one doesn't, they continue to get super rich the way they have for decades, and it positions Ryan to run in 2016/20, at which point they can get universally rich.

What I did NOT say was the grade school summary you posted. It is my belief that, after the election, Obama will push for economic policies that move in the same direction as those openly advocated by the right, by which I mean cuts to Medicare and/or Social Security. You disagree with that, I assume.

So look, there's no point in arguing here. Obama is almost assured victory this year. If his Administration isn't pushing for a new "Grand Bargain" that incorporates the cuts I mentioned in the first half of his second term, I'll admit to be overly cynical. If he does, perhaps you will admit to being naive.

Are you auditioning for the role of DU's most snarky progressive? I think a few already have that a lock on that.

Here's what I think about the "grand bargain".

I think it was mostly a bluff to paint Boehner into a corner during the deficit debate.

Especially over the revenue/tax rate on the wealthy.

And it worked - for those paying attention it proved the Boehner WAS NOT INTERESTED IN DEFICIT REDUCTION.

So I am not worried about it. Especially if I get off my fat ass and work to get the House back in Democratic hands.

When they throw this particular shit at the wall, will it stick? Or rather, how well will it stick? How much will stick? Some of it will, and that's valuable information for Rove et al to have, to see how far they can push the envelope, even if they don't win this time around. They've pushed it very aggressively so far and they've done amazingly well with that strategy, I bet they're even surprised themselves at how well it's worked (and keeps on working.) So they push harder the next time.

One difference this time is that the Obama team is prepared and willing to get down and dirty too. Going on the offense instead of just defending when the Repubs attack. I was pretty impressed with today's quick response.

The R team might be thinking they can change course if Romney sinks like a stone in the polling, that they can manufacture some excuse or scandal if they need to pull Ryan out. However, by announcing Ryan they've given away their evil plan, the same one that Romney has been so careful up to this point not to disclose the details of (consciously, at least - he oozes it at a subconscious level.)

That whole entitled rich kid, I'm-better-than-you-common-people meme that Romney's been trying so hard to shake - it's carved in stone now. (All the Rs don't help. Rotten by association. Richie Rich, Romney/Ryan, Rolls Royce, Rand, Republican, Reagan...) There's no resetting the Etch-A-Sketch now, not this close to the election. But yeah, the plutocracy wins either way, it's just a matter of how much of their wish list they're gonna get this round. I'd love to see us push back the other way, though. Like the French are with their proposed 75% tax rate for the top income bracket.

In any rational country Romney wouldn't poll above the teens on his best day. Add Ryan and that number should drop to the single digits. But America has more than its fair share of extremists and crazies...

They are willing to be deliberately ignorant of any truth about him in order to believe every falsehood ever told about him.

They are willing to be deliberately ignorant about any deficits in any republican plan on any issue, as long as that plan is opposed to anything Obama is for. They are willing to close their eyes and ears to everything harmful that the GOP has proposed in order to oust Obama, including to American workers, their own parents and children.

That is the reality we are in. They are not stupid by a long shot. They are simply so filled with hate that nothing else matters anymore. I'm speaking of my own sisters and my oldest friends. I see them for what they are.

willing to devastate themselves, their future and that of their family/friends, anyone, to oust Obama. For several decades I had thought this country had moved beyond racism, but the past several years have proved far different.

What I always find amazing is many people don't seem to realize the repercussions of their vote and their future in this country. Too many take everything for granted often not seemingly realizing they will be affected too even perhaps in ways they do not foresee.

very handily blame it on Obama. So it's not their fault, you see. Obama made them do it.

That was said to me by a loved one.

For a while I was devastated. No longer. The gloves are off. DU is helping me immensely. I post articles I find here on FB so that family and friends can read the facts if they want to. I also post about helping the poor and sick and elderly from various religious perspectives, like what the Catholic nuns and bishops said about the Paul Ryan budget. And what Jesus said.

I have no mercy.

But I also think that some of them are not well educated, but rather well "indoctrinated" with views that encourage them to think of themselves as being victimized by Obama and his administration. They really do believe a lot of the crap that is put out there by the flakes....the Birther crap, he's a socialist, born in Kenya, etc. They hate Obama with a hatred that is quite visceral and they are vocal about it. I also have relatives that fall in this category so I have personal experience with people who think this way.

One area where I see potential problems getting through to these people is that they are being reinforced with their mean spirited, hateful attitudes toward the poor and needy through their churches. I have seen that in my daughter-in-law and son. They very much resent help from the government for those that they do not believe "deserve" it. Never mind that they got help from us when they were younger and struggling and without our help would have been forced to rely on Food Stamps and other assistance from time to time. They are no longer in that position but have a pretty stingy attitude to those in need. My DIL quotes the Bible and tells me that the church is supposed to take care of the needy and she even agrees with me that the churches are not doing enough. I told her it is a simple problem of math....there is too much need for the religious institutions to handle the problem without any government help. I still stand by my assertion that they have missed the essential teachings of their Savior to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Do Unto Others as You'd Have Done Unto you. Take care of the sick, the hungry and the needy. Missed that completely. It has been perverted and twisted like so many other things that come from the Bible. One day my DIL actually put on FB, "He who is able and does not work, shall not eat." A quote from the Bible.

One other observation.....listening to Romney after he spoke today. He implied that they are going to run a clean campaign and won't be resorting to "dirty tactics". I think he is going to use this to try to club Obama when they return to the issue of Romney's tax issues and other things he refuses to talk about. They are going to categorize that as dirty politics and try to make people think bad about Obama/Biden for bringing it up. Maybe it won't work since so many people REALLY DO want to know about his tax records, his Bain record and his humongous IRA. Now they also have all of Ryan's baggage to explain, too. Good luck with that avoidance scheme you got going there, Sparky.

First, they cheated their way into two terms. Then, they lied us into two wars, both of which resulted in the the deaths or maiming of tens of thousands of people, and wasted trillions of dollars that could have been spent improving this country. And, they have no remorse about it, whatsoever. They partied while New Orleans drowned. They still don't care about the millions of Americans whose lives they helped destroy along with our economy. And, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Ryan may have no compunction about destroying millions of people, but these two vile, sorry excuses for human beings already have done that.

They were the same people in 2000 as they were throughout, and as they are now. They had their agenda in place, but hid it from everyone. They played the affable nice guys, while fully intending to fuck everyone over with their wars and economic agenda. That makes them worse in my book. Those of us who have been paying attention all these decades knew what was coming.

And, no, they did not win 2004, either. Just ask the people of Ohio, thousands of whom had their votes flipped in those black box voting machines--if they were even allowed to cast their vote in the first place.

Medicare. He needs to explain that Social Security is, already, through our tax system, means tested. Seniors pay taxes on their income just like everyone else, and rich people pay taxes on most of the Social Security they receive if they even receive much.

He also needs to point out that if Medicare did not exist, we would probably have to invent it since medical costs are soaring as are available treatments for the ailments of older people. Our Judeo-Christian traditions do not permit us to sentence people, even older people, to death for lack of healthcare.

Obama should pull the Christian card -- point out that Jesus healed the sick.

How can a supposedly good Catholic (who has only three children himself by the way) fail to support a strong Medicare program for suffering seniors?

I hope that Obama turns the religion card back on the Republicans. It's about time to do that.

Obama should invite prominent religious leaders with social consciences, liberal and conservative, to the White House and make the point about the priority of loving our neighbors and caring for the less fortunate.

Because that point about loving our neighbors and caring for the less fortunate who may live far from us is what makes a person a Christian -- not self-serving claims about belief or faith. I hope Obama talks about this. And that he puts the need for Social Security and Medicare into a religious context.

I certainly hope you are correct. And I agree, all things being equal,
that R&R wouldn't have a prayer of even coming close to winning in
Nov.

However, all things are NOT equal. Far from it. There are THREE
ways this is true:

1) This massive nasty voter suppression that's happening in swing states,
that Holder is being timid at best about fighting it; being too busy making life hell
for Medical Marijuana patients and growers.

(2) The fact that we never have fixed the e-voting mess with secret
privately owned source codes to flip votes on touch-screen voting machines.

3) Citizen$ United $$$$$$$$$ run amuck flooding airwaves with poisonous
hateful ads.

When you add all these up, esp. keeping in mind how Bush got "elected"
two times over under highly suspicious conditions -- then I'm not so sure.

I am sure to work for and vote for Obama though.

Sooner or later the internet will be heavily censored in response to "Terrorist threats " ( i.e. freedom of speech ).

After the standard of living of the 99% has been reduced to the point that we no longer have the time to think about anything but making ends meet, The 1% will no longer need to spend all that money to buy elections...

But then I wake up and have hope that my fears are unjustified.

This election will be the one that makes or breaks my faith...

As for me having "it right..." I've never hoped so much as now
that I have it totally wrong; and that Obama will be re-elected,
as people mobilize to overcome these ridiculous barriers to
Democratic-leaning voters even voting in the first place, and
then even if they DO get to "vote", it gets lost somewhere in
the bowels of Diebold and "counted" in ways not trace-able,
even by Government Elections Officials.

I think Obama actually won by a huger margin, that he was still
able to overwhelm the e-voting buggery, as they can only fudge the
number so much, without it becoming too obvious. But now
we must overcome Voter ID obstacles and Citizens United,
so I'm very concerned.

All the more reason to get off my ass and do some campaigning
this year. cheers, ~john

51. Ugly ticket? Yes. Good ticket? Yes for the Democrats.
Sat Aug 11, 2012, 05:40 PM
Aug 2012

The fact that these two people made it to the top of the ticket in a General Election does point that there is something rotten in these United States.

However Obama and Biden are decent, sensible, moderate individuals. The Romney/Ryan ticket may be great for the Democrats in the short term, but sadly this ticket just moves America further to the right. This ticket makes Ronald Reagan look like a left wing Republican, and it makes Eisenhower look like an extreme Liberal.

I need America to prove me wrong. I need America to show that it has a conscience, and doesn't vote for a particular person just because they belong to "their party". Ideally I'd like a Mondale-style defeat of Romney - actually I'd like Romney to get less than 13 Electoral College votes. I somehow think it isn't going to happen but with Paul Ryan on board that other bus ... Democrats can turn the heat up on the simple fact: Romney & Ryans' plan removes the Social Safety Net and increases taxes on those who can ill afford it.

Reagan's election set America and the world back a generation. But even Reagan disguised the agenda with softer language and an image of a caring old grandpa type. A win for Ryan/Romney is a victory for those all those who believe that our world only has room for winners - their kind of people. It could happen. Anything less than an indisputable defeat for this ticket of turpitude and depravity would be a step into the darkness.

Romney as you say is just interested in being President-- he will say anything, promise any policy which he thinks will get him there.
