General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHere's two ways RR will go after those 55+. Just easy starts for them.
1. Raise the Medicare eligibility age, beginning immediately.Move the needle, a month at a time. If you're, say, 64 and expect to get Medicare on your 65th birthday, they will try to add as little as one or as much as six months immediately. If you're 60, we're talking possibly a couple years.
2. This affects all current Social Security recipients: Implement the "chained CPI."
The "chained CPI" would recalculate the Consumer Price Index used to raise Social Security benefits so as to keep up with inflation to "account for consumer options." In other words, if consumers have bought beef, and that goes up in price, they assume consumers will simply change to chicken. If that goes up, then seniors can move to cat food. It's an insidious ploy to immediately reduce benefits to existing and future recipients. Actually, if there was an honest "senior CPI," Social Security benefits would go up in excess of general inflation, because seniors spend such a disproportionate share of their incomes on health care costs, which continue to explode.
These are just a couple modest moves to expect immediately that give lie to the "if you're over 55" claim. Of course, their ultimate goal is far more radical. Ayn Rand and her insane philosophy will destroy this country if they get in.

And have access to organic vegetables, then again they'll probably really be sprayed with Paraquat, to save a few cents.
It is true that some fellow almost geezers have discussed living communally and off the land to lower costs. That was something I studied in school in Vermont in the late 70s. Communes! Most of them were pretty sketchy.

(11,064 posts)the federal income tax. Ronald Reagan, in addition to dramatically increasing the Social Security tax (while being given false publicity for allegedly lowering taxes), made 50% of the Social Security benefits subject to taxation under certain circumstances. Bill Clinton increased the percentage from 50% to 85%.
Under a third way, the Medicare payouts on behalf of Medicare recipients could be taxed to the Medicare recipients.
