Judge Kavanaugh seems to have a problem with alcohol. Is an active alcoholic disqualifying for a seat on the supreme court?

(6,344 posts)He might be hung over when he is hearing cases and not be able to fully "hear" and make major decisions.

They can be able fully to function.

(31,011 posts)Being a former alcoholic, recovering or whatever one chooses to call it shouldn't be disqualifying, IMO.
He could claim that, but it would utterly destroy his credibility since he called himself a choir boy and categorically denied the assaults.
The asshole has boxed himself in and if he wants to try to save himself, he's going to have keep lying and blaming everyone except himself.

(31,261 posts)If he participated in gang rapes in Maryland, and look like he may have been at least around one that a woman has issued a sworn statement about, he could face a rath of criminal charges if other women come forward.

(60,010 posts)I was struck by the fact his friends and others are all reporting his "heavy" drinking in college, his personality change, etc.
Seems he had been showing a lot of tolerance at a young age.

(31,261 posts)I have a brother who forgets stuff if he even has two beers. I have never been a drinker of alcohol or did drugs, so him forgetting stuff can be really frustrating for me at times.

(63,852 posts)if this POS gets on the bench, we will be out in the streets. They do not take these allegations seriously again trying to knock women down. I am furious.
Equinox Moon
(6,344 posts)It is an epidemic and we are only scratching the surface of how really bad this is. Men have been using women for their own pleasure, regardless of it being harmful to the woman. It is HIGHLY prevalent.

(3,064 posts)He may be a nondrinker now but I doubt he's a social drinker.
Looks like he was a hard core blackout drinker. Someone like that with one drink they'd probably be off to the races.

(63,221 posts)Either way, it sounds like this guy has a problem with moderation and self-control. Definitely not someone you want serving as a Supreme Court justice.

(3,064 posts)This guy just reeks to high heaven. Hell, the fact he hasn't withdrawn his nomination shows what little decency he has.

(7,702 posts)...call the "upper crust." Meetings and parties for Doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, and ton's of other social events.
We both agree that compared to the other professional groups, when the meetings and parties we cooked and served expensive food and drink, the groups of judges drink more booze than the other groups.
Judging from my experience that many of the other more professional groups actually warn about drinking too much, and it seems to cut down on future drinking events within their groups.
With the judges group meetings, and parties, they seem to all friendly and kind enough to excuse excessive drinking by their fellow members.
It's a problem in the DC-MD-VA area.

(6,855 posts)Theres plenty of evidence that this guy is dangerous when drunk and based on emails from W administration that he is a blackout drinker (he admitted to his buddies that he forgot portion of their party weekend).
Kavanaugh will give secrets to his poker buddies. He will tip the hand of the court. He will politically strategize with republicans from the bench.
He may continue to get drunk and abuse people.
And he has not even said publicly that he has a problem that he is dealing with. (I have a friend who is suspended as a lawyer because of a DUI. Until she is off probation, she will not be able to reapply. She is not a judge, just an attorney, and an honest person even when drunk).
This drinking thing is a huge issue with me as is giving away grand jury secrets, abusive behavior, lying to Congress on multiple occasions.

(6,344 posts)He has an addition personality. I understand he has a gambling problem as well.
They say these hearings are a job interview. What employer would hire someone with issues, MAJOR issues?
Here is my list of reasons not to "hire" him:
-power & control addict
-alcoholism with black-outs
-gambling
-extreme right-winger
-a white supremacist
-rulings side with corporations and not people
-the only judge to write descent decisions against the majority
- etc....etc....etc....
