I am claustrophobic, and have issues on airplanes.

I actually have to be on an aisle seat or I feel trapped and panic. One time, many years ago I experienced a panic attack, and had to get out of the middle seat to seek help from flight attendants. They kindly talked with me and let me stay in their area until it was time to land. Then I had to suck it up and go back to the middle seat. I made it through that, but I absolutely will not get on a plane unless I'm in the aisle seat.

I travel with my husband domestically and internationally several times a year. Thanks to his position at university we usually fly business class, but until relatively recently we went economy.

I did have an attack on a plane, once, though. I flew from Hong Kong to Seattle with a cold. I slept most of the 12 hour flight, and didn't clear my ears. As a result, by the time we landed I was virtually deaf. They announced that there would be a delay deplaning because customs was quite busy. I was in the middle seat and began to get extremely claustrophobic, to the point where I climbed over my wife so that I could stand in the aisle. The flight attendants weren't happy, but let me stay because we were already on the ground.

How I was able to clear my ears so that I could fly on to Chicago is a story worthy of the Keystone Kops.

Hubby and I were on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras and I freaked out in the tight knit crowd. I desperately made myself to the edge of the road and had to stay there until husband came over and we walked very slowly to an exit road.

Another time we were in a sleigh on Lake Louise. I was in the middle and had an attack. Made the driver stop so I could move to the side seat.

Also have had a few attacks in overcrowded elevators.

It's a pretty serious issue for me.
