The Republicans have a senate majority. It definitely doesn't strike me as something aimed at the "general public" opinion. It also struck me as coming from a viewpoint of real uncertainty about prospects for confirmation.

I have the strong feeling that the R's have hit that tipping point, where regaining their SCOTUS majority is more important to their ability to maintain power/stay out of jail than future elections.
