With Democrats united to change the name of Paul Manafort Sr. Drive and Republicans steadfastly against it, the common council Wednesday voted to remove the streets controversial title.
But dont look for a new road sign.
Republican Mayor Erin Stewart made clear that the name will be staying, because shes going to veto the move. vote
Absolutely. This is unconscionable, Stewart said before the common council began debating the matter Wednesday night.
That means the name will likely stay in place, because Democrats would need at least one GOP aldermans vote to override her.
The controversy that started last winter over the roads original name, Paul Manafort Drive, has morphed into a party-line disagreement over the new name, Paul Manafort Sr. Drive.
This process brings embarrassment to the city, said council Minority Leader Robert Smedley. Its an embarrassment that everyone is in a room for two hours talking about this.

Note: Even though the road is named after Manafort's father, many in New Britain feel that HE wasn't a very decent person, either.
