Reality check - what will happen after today

The way I see this, there are two things to consider. First, we have to prepare for the likely reality: Kavanaugh will be confirmed. Unless two republicans suddenly grow a brain, that’s what’s going to happen. It happened with Clarence Thomas, and unlike out in the real world, the insulated world of Congress has not changed so I have no reason to believe this will play out any differently.

Which brings me to the second thing.

Has the metoo movement caused enough change in society that his confirmation will result in a backlash among women voters in November?

History reveals that change happens very slowly, with waves of change occurring, then long periods of little change as the tide rolls back. Will there be another tide coming? If I had to guess, my answer is the metoo movement has not woken up enough people to bring another wave of change. It may be that the next tide will not come until the overturning of Roe v Wade.

It takes big splashes to wake people up. I’m not sure we’re there yet.

I hope I am wrong.

I didn't see any game changers today, we really don't know anything now that we didn't know 24 hours ago, other than the physical appearance of Ford and Kavanaugh today. He seemed especially weak and whiny in the beginning of his testimony, and she seemed to almost always be on the verge of tears, except when she was flashing a brief, brave smile at a Democratic Senator, or the Republican prosecutor when the latter was trying to be nominally nice.

For the record, he cried more than she did, audible sniffs all over the place in the beginning. And while I thought she was drinking a lot of water, he made Mario Rubio look reasonable in the consumption of that liquid. It's probably the most he's fluid he's ever consumed that wasn't beer. He did give a rousing defense of beer, though, and all the frat boys are saying, "Yeah!"

She was older than I expected her to look, all we'd seen so far was that sunglasses picture that was probably a five year-old screen grab. If she had only used hair spray, she wouldn't have had to keep pulling the hair out of her face. At one point, some of it was completely wrapped around the arm of her glasses. And, let's face it, we've heard his voice before, but never hers, and I suppose some people might have found it distracting.

But, on substance, she kept on message, even though the Republican prosecutor got her to admit to the points that she was trying to establish, especially on being able to blame DiFi for the course of events of the last couple of months.

The GOP seemed fully united on "don't blame, tear down, or discredit Ford, but keep up the pressure on Feinstein," and they got that message out to their base. The Democratic response was, "More investigation and time is needed," but I don't think that will convince Murkowski, and especially not Collins.
