(268,998 posts)The White House says President Obama -- in Chicago for five fundraisers -- called Prime Minister David Cameron today to "congratulate him and the people of the United Kingdom and London on an extremely successful Olympic games, which speaks to the character and spirit of our close ally.
"Both leaders commended the exceptional performances by both the Olympic teams of the United States and Great Britain and noted how proud we all are of them. The President thanked the Prime Minister for hosting so many US athletes and fans and for the extremely warm welcome shown to First Lady Michelle Obama."
Cameron, of course, took a swipe at Mitt Romney when he questioned the UK's preparations for the games.

(8,556 posts)America has always been a somewhat inward-looking country, with a very strong tradition of isolationism, which is partly due to geography and history. Britain, OTOH, commanded the largest empire in the world for quite some time. Britain is also part of Europe and a member of the EU, which means its affairs are intertwined with other countries in a way that those of the US are not.
One thing that's always struck me about the British media is how much its international coverage focuses on former colonies. That's certainly understandable and not unique to Britain. But there is something of the legacy of colonialism in the way in which Britons look outward.
I've always been a champion of Americans paying more attention to the rest of the world. But I also acknowledge the fact this is somewhat at odds with our historical legacy.

(22,271 posts)the FREE online BBC coverage -- virtually commercial free and intelligent commentary. I happened to catch a little bit of the NBC coverage at my aunt's house and it positively sucked. NBC and their never-ending commercials. Ten minutes of event, five minutes of commercials.

(56,177 posts)I feel that way after every Olympics...it goes on a little too long...and towards the end there's always controversy.
That said, it made me want to take a trip to London again!
