Ryan won't join Florida tour

Ryan won't join Florida tour

By WILLIAM MARCH

TAMPA -- Amid speculation that Paul Ryan's presence on the ticket could pose a risk in Florida, Ryan won't accompany Mitt Romney on his tour of the state today.

<...>

Democrats say Ryan's presence on the ticket could hurt Romney among Florida's large elderly population because of Ryan's well-known budget proposals, which include drastic changes in the Medicare and Social Security programs.

They were quick to leap on the Romney campaign's announcement that the presidential candidate will tour Florida, but without Ryan.

"Rather than vouch for Ryan on Medicare, Team Mitt sets up no-fly zone in Florida and sends new VP pick to Iowa," Obama adviser David Axelrod tweeted Sunday, providing the lead item for a Florida Democratic Party news release.

Ryan pick could hurt Romney in crucial fight for Florida

By Tom Brown

MIAMI (Reuters) - In Florida last month, President Barack Obama worked up the crowd as he assailed a Republican plan to slash the federal budget deficit while also cutting taxes for millionaires by "squeezing more money out of our seniors."

He was referring to a plan proposed by congressman Paul Ryan to get elderly Americans to pay more out of pocket for their healthcare by changing the government-run Medicare program for seniors.

"It's wrong to ask you to pay for Medicare so that people who are doing well right now get even more," Obama told a gathering of retirees in West Palm Beach on July 19. "That's no way to reduce the deficit. We shouldn't be squeezing more money out of our seniors."

It's a line of attack the Obama campaign likely will be pressing even harder now that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has chosen Ryan as his running mate.

He weighed releasing Ryan vs taking the hits for not releasing him and decided to keep him in the vault, away from the voters to minimize the fallout.

Isn't working with the tax returns, but maybe the strategy will work with the VP nom.

Maybe it won't.

I guess he is safe in Wisconsin.

But people get old in EVERY state. People are concerned about Social Security and Medicare in EVERY state.

To the extent that the Ryan plan carefully avoids killing these programs outright for people older than 55 today, that means that "retirement states" like Florida and Arizona should actually be LESS concerned about the Ryan plan than other states.

For the Republican candidates for state office. I posted about this in NC group with links to a couple of my posts in another thread.

For exame, the GOP candidate for NC governor, McCrory has cultivated his image as a non-scary Republican in order to attract enough independents. Ryan fires up the GOP base but will scare a lot of independents here. We need to make Ryan and McCrory the new Siamese Twins. (The originals lived mostly in NC and died here.)

The native RW in NC dislike those those from Wisconsin nearly as much as those from Massachusetts. Turnout on Sunday in NC for RR was tepid.
