Back in the early '80s, the "Original Preppy Handbook" came out. It was supposed to be a parody of Prepdom, but it was taken seriously by non-preps who wanted to look like they were preppies. People like the Kavanaughs were who this book was written about. All someone on a Democratic Senator's staff could have done was find a used copy of this book, and a lot of their questions would have been answered.

(115,858 posts)I might even have a copy of it lying around somewhere. It's a great satire of that "look" - Topsiders without socks, cloth belt with little whales, sweater tied around the neck, the whole thing. I think they still dress that way.

(2,959 posts)he and another khaki and topsidered pseudo preppy buddy decided to give me grief about my "hippy" attire and general appearance.
At least until I pointed out that unlike him and his fellow poser public school kid I actually had gone to and graduated from to a Prep school. I tossed off "Non est homo vestimenta sua."* just to drive the point home.

(It's good for a few laughs-from an alumnus of a Prep School).
