What, did I have a deathwish, that's a very RED state, you may ask. No not really, plus most of the canvassing was also part of the GOTV movement in the inner city of Savannah's poorer, blacker neighborhoods to assist people with rides to the polls. It's hard to get a door to open when a clean cut 30 year old white guy knocks in the middle of the day, but every once in a while a door opened. After it was shown to them that I was not their to harass or sell something to them, most were very receptive to voting for Obama. Most had already planned to vote for Obama and several were glad to now have a ride to the polls. I cant tell you how many old black ladies grabbed me and hugged my neck. It was only outdone by the number of old black women that hugged my neck or older black men who shook my hand with a tear in their eye on that November evening when we shut down the bar where out watch party was held. Sure, Obama didnt win Georgia, not even close, but you couldnt have told anyone at that party or anyone who voted for Obama that their vote didnt matter just as much as anybody else's.
I'm not able to canvas this year, but hopefully I can get to the polls to be a poll watcher. If you havent participated in this process, you should try it at least once, it's very rewarding and can make a difference.
How time flies.
