Dog in a car. This is really weird.

My buddy has a rental condo at a beach resort.
(Location redacted to protect my buddy)

This week it's rented to three state troopers.
They're working.
Patrolling a nearby interstate highway that's a big drug route.
I went there with him to do some minor maintenance.

As we were leaving the parking lot I asked "Where are the trooper cars?"
"Over there."
Two were unmarked, a sedan and an SUV. One, an American 'sporty' car did have the state trooper logo on the doors.
The hood was open on the SUV.
"What's with that?"
"The engine's running."
"How come?"
"His dog is in it. It's a drug dog."
Holy shit!

"Isn't there anywhere he can keep the dog down here when they're not working?"
"Naw. Has to be a state approved facility and there's nothing like that here. No dogs allowed in the condos."

So the poor dog is 'living' in the car with the AC on and the engine running.
And of course my tax dollars are paying for the gas.
Which is really beside the point, because that's no way to treat a dog.

jeez
If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it.

BTW, the troopers are really muscular guys with shaved heads.
Far be it for me to get down on a guy for his 'hair style', but...
Spooky.

for leaving his K-9 in the car, and the poor dog died.
Or maybe he was fired. I can't remember (and I just asked my husband, and he can't either).

We were friggin' pissed, whatever happened to the human officer.

Maybe a yokel sheriff if you know him. They don't need the dog out there bad enough to put him/her through that. Drug dogs can be unreliable as well. What's that do to the dogs preparedness and training? Get a traumatized dog out there alerting to everything and screwing people over.

Sure it wo9uld be better if the dog was permitted inside the condo, but apparently that's a no no. The dog is much better insode the car with the a/c. If this was a months log assignment, I think you'd have a beef, but for a week...the dog will be just fine.

BTW, I've been a volunteer rescuer fgor 20 years, and honestly, I care about and have more respect for many of the rescues I've homed than many people!

After all, a drug dog is not your every day run of the mill dog.

Plus, I don't believe the trooper dept doesn't have facilities to keep the dogs short term. They must.

Poor doggie. Bad enough he has to work for a living.

You'd think the condo would make an exception in this case.

I think someone just doesn't want the dog in their room and shouldn't be in a K-9 unit.

I think they definitely fall under they can damn where they go please as service animals...or law officers.

What I don't get is why rent a condo where dogs are not allowed?? I think its animal abuse, you shouldve reported it to Animal Control.

Mon Aug 13, 2012, 08:41 PM

takes in strays and adopts them out through a local non-profit, BUT......

The back of a full size SUV is something like 3' X 4' or about 12 sq. ft.

Anyone who uses a cage for their dog (I don't, never have and never will) confines them in a very similar space.

This dog's area is air conditioned and odds are it is carpeted with some kind of pad for the dog to lay on.

I'm willing to bet that there are rules about how long it can stay in there without any exercise. These are expensive animals and I must assume that they are reasonably well cared for.

I will say again that I am not in favor of this but I don't think it is cruel either. Many dogs, and cats for that matter, are treated much worse than this.

If you really want to be outraged then take it up with the condo owner and any association he needs to deal with. An animal like that should be an exception to their "no dog" rule.
