Trump says family separations deter illegal immigration

David Shepardson
3 MIN READ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that separating migrant families at the border could deter illegal immigration and that he was considering several options to tighten border security.

In June, Trump abandoned his policy of separating immigrant children from their parents on the U.S.-Mexico border after images of youngsters in cages sparked outrage at home and abroad.

But some Trump administration officials have said the policy, under which some 2,600 children were separated from their parents, was needed to secure the border and deter illegal immigration.

Trump seemed to support that argument on Saturday.

“If they feel there will be separation, they don’t come,” he said of migrants during comments to reporters at the White House.

And I take exception with the wording of the second paragraph. Bad Reuters.

Working to make living conditions tolerable in Central America would deter immigration even more.

But if you don't even know where to find Honduras on a map, you probably see things differently.

I'm sure you're right. I think "intellectually incurious" is something you have to prove these days in order to register as a Republican.

might advocate simply killing them at the border. Not only would that discourage illegal immigration it would render moot any change of mind by refugees seeking entrance.

It is not a crime to request asylum

This is meant to make Spanish-speaking brown skinned people suffer

It is pure racism

Meanwhile, Sabraw's order and the Flores Settlement are being violated without any consequences. Same goes for emoluments clause, federal records law, etc. No predecessor could have gotten away with 1/10th as much blatant criminality. There's a new outrage every hour and we (the population as a whole) become numb. Chaos by design. Lying, obfuscation, Gish Galloping, circus performances (rallies, Kanye in the oval, etc.), repetition of talking points, normalization of the abnormal, and so on.

Trump knows exactly what he's doing.

8. Actually, it discourages *legal* immigration.

It *increases* the likelihood immigrants will try to avoid all contact with government officials and go undocumented instead.

If you were in the country without documentation, why on earth would you voluntarily do anything this government told you to do?

Is illegal immigration so bad that this had to be done?
