I spent a number of years living in Carmel and Pacific Grove, love calamari, but as a native Californian, I hate people calling our state "Cali."
Just like people from San Francisco bristle at "Frisco."
Not good.
I like Beto!
Caliman73
(11,740 posts)We call it Cali (not pronounced like the LL Cool J song) or Califas all the time. Given that Latinos are the largest racial group in California, you may want to get used to it.

(3,414 posts)There are many people in Texas who hate Carnival Cruz, but are still very much RACIST. They hate Obama because he is BLACK. I lived in Texas for about 30 years, mostly in Houston, and the last 10 years in Austin. Let me tell you of two of my experiences:
1. In 2008, I had had about enough of W and his band of war criminals. I really liked Obama, and thought he was a much better candidate for the office of President than any other candidate, so I voted for him. I also put up several Obama signs in my yard. One night my house was egged by some of my racist neighbors. Made a big mess, but I left those signs up anyway. BTW, I'm an older lady with natural blonde hair and blue eyes.
2. At one of my jobs in Houston, I worked with a woman from the small town of Mineola, Texas. At that time, I took my first long-distance trip on Amtrak, and I LOVED it! I returned to work a week later extolling the virtues and pleasures of train travel. This co-worker looked shocked and told me, "I would NEVER travel on Amtrak!" I asked her why and she said, and I quote, "Too many minorities." No shit. I guess she thought that because I had white skin and blue eyes like she had, that I must think like she did. From that moment on, I no longer considered her to be a friend. And there are many many Caucasians in Texas that think like that. Thank god I moved to Washington state last year. People here are sane. My only regrets are 1. I now cannot vote for Beto, and 2. I miss my HEB, dammit!

I will not but I was tempted to report your post for attacking a Democratic candidate.
That said, I love Robert "Beto" O'Rourke. It makes no difference to how much I like and miss former president Obama. What's one thing got to do with another?

(23,123 posts)Going to TX for a family reunion in Weatherford with my sister next week. She's made me promise not to start fights with my redneck rural relatives, because based on our experience with them 30 years ago, we're pretty certain they will be strong Trumpers. I hope to hear some good things about Beto there, but will be surprised if that happens. My plan is to spend most of my time with my 90 and 93 year old aunts, they are the reason I'm going since this will probably be the last time I get to see them and spend time with them. Since we'll only be with them for a day or so, hopefully I can deflect or ignore BS. I will certainly start nothing and just want to spend time with moms' family. However, if pushed, or if I see something vile, I will speak up.

(25,401 posts)Beto: Columbia BA English lit. Obama: Harvard Law Cruz: Harvard Law
Also Obama is much different kind of politician. One thing I don't like about Beto is that he has pigeon holed himself into these crazy term limits. Beto was on city council and has been in congress since 2013. Beto seems to know the state very well. His experience has been his outreach across the state. This is a plus and minus. The downside: Not much debate prep time - LOL
Cruz is a master debater. I listened to the first debate and was pleased. (I missed the second because I was blockwalking) I don't expect Beto to "win" a debate against Cruz.
Beto is running a very non-traditional campaign. I think in Texas, it is the only way to possibly win. As to whether this type of model should be replicated and whether it is not sustainable for other statewide candidates remains to be seen. (Other candidates lose volunteers to him) He relies very heavily on volunteers. (Much, much more than other campaigns) Still if we want to "take back our state" it will take an army of volunteers. OTOH, not as many statewide candidates can replicate Beto. Lupe falls flat. Collier can do it. He's got "it" believe it or not. Kim Olson is trying something similiar, but she's ag and theaterical, she can get away with it. Joi Chevalier (comptroller) probably could not.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Very successful. Dana Bash kept saying at the start of each segment that Cruz refused to attend which was great.
i think Beto has many very liberal stances so it is a very fine line he must walk to try and explain things well enough to pull in many Texans who hear the conservative line constantly here.
Yes, agree that Cruz is a brilliant debater..but still think there were ways he could have practiced with a list of the top ten potential Cruz slurs...not to get into detailed rebuttal but to burn him with one liner then spend the rest of the time for what he wants to discuss. For instance..."I am not going to to spend my time defending lies about my record..anyone can look up the truth"...and then move on.
All moot now anyway. Gotv time

(31,235 posts)I don't think Obama feels at all slighted when it comes to a candidate's local politics. Obviously, Obama has to be used strategically. Obama can't help Joe Manchin, he can't help Claire McCaskill; he can't help Tester or Heitkamp, and he can't help Beto. If it helps to distance himself from national Democrats, I say more power to him. That said, I'm in NC, so I can't vote for him either.

(12,132 posts)I am still friends with several people from HS although we mostly only communicate on FB. Nearly all of them are still conservative christians but I am heartened to see that a few of them are openly supporting Beto (and catching a lot of heat from most of the rest of the school and friends). They know I'm a liberal atheist yet a lot of them remain friends.
One of my friends is a teacher now and a lot of his students are Dreamers and he just said he could not come back to school after election day and look them in the eye if he had voted for the guy that wants to send them all back to Mexico. He was immediately ganged up on with lots of "But he supports baby murderers! They need to go back and come in legally!" and lots of other horse shit. He told those people that he has been voting for conservative republicans all his life and none of them have done one thing to stop abortion. At least if he votes for Beto he knows he did what he could to help these students he loves with all his heart.
to me, that is a remarkable turn-around.

Require background checks for all gun sales to ensure that firearms only get into the hands of responsible, law-abiding individuals. This means finally closing the gun show, online, and boyfriend loopholes.
Stop selling weapons of war and high-capacity magazines to ensure that firearms designed to kill as effectively and efficiently as possible on the battlefield arent used in our schools, our streets, our churches, and our concerts.
Block the erosion of Texas license to carry standards by opposing Concealed Carry Reciprocity, which would force Texas to allow anyone from states with weak to nonexistent conceal carry laws to disregard our own public safety requirements.
Fully support federal research on gun violence so that we can better understand and address its root causes.
Turin_C3PO
(14,009 posts)I personally support universal background checks, a 3 day waiting period, requiring a safety class, closing the loopholes about gun sales/shows, and banning high capacity magazines.
I do support a ban on semi-automatic weapons of war but, in all honesty, Im not sure that would actually help curtail mass shootings.

(1,896 posts)I do like Beto and will be voting for him every bit as much as I will be voting against Cruz. I have no reservations on either score and will be doing so with a smile on my face and a song in my heart. He's admirable, he's got lots of wonderful qualities, and the absolute worst thing I can say about the guy is that he made some mistakes when he was younger. Even there, he owns those mistakes, so my tiny part of the electorate can forgive him quite easily.
That said, the guy is a fountain of superhuman energy and optimism. I can only take close proximity to people like that for so long before I just want to strangle them. In small doses--like I get from political figures I don't personally deal with--that's great. But if you locked me in a room with him, I have no doubt that just watching him would exhaust me inside of 24 hours.
