... there is mounting evidence that President Trump is, shall we say, less than eager to determine the full truth ...
... if the administration falls short in demanding a full accounting from the Saudis, or, worse, goes along with a sham Saudi accounting, either of those will in itself be another truth that wont remain buried forever. Thats because it will be an appropriate topic for congressional scrutiny ...
This is exactly the kind of issue that Congress should get into, Joel Rubin, who was the State Departments senior liaison to the House of Representatives in 2014 and 2015, told me today. Weve got a specific issue where the White Houses comments are changing and confused. The primary liaison to the Saudis, Jared Kushner, is hidden from public view. This is a slam dunk issue for oversight ...
... House committees could probe what transpired privately between the Trump administration and the Saudis throughout the process. Congress could subpoena communications between the White House, State Department, and the Saudis internal discussions related to the Khashoggi affair, Rubin told me. He added that House committees could seek private or public briefings from intelligence officials about what the intelligence indicates about the Khashoggi case, in contrast to what the Saudi investigation found ...

From a 2017 State Department report on Saudi Arabia human rights:
"Well-known Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi said he moved to the United States in 'self-exile' and 'could face arrest upon returning home' due to his writing. He claimed his column in Saudi newspaper al-Hayat had been cancelled under political pressure. In 2016 authorities purportedly banned him from writing, appearing on television, and attending conferences as the result of remarks he made that were interpreted as criticizing the president of the United States, according to multiple media sources. Earlier, in July, authorities reportedly lifted the writing ban against him"

... He swiftly dispatched his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Riyadh and Ankara not only to gather some intelligence, but mainly to defuse the bomb that may blow up in the presidents face.
The extraordinary interview that his confidant, Senator Lindsey Graham, gave to Fox news, shows the pressure on the president as well as the entire Republican Party with next month's midterm election approaching.
Graham didnt just let off steam, vowing he wouldnt visit Saudi Arabia until the issue was resolved and accusing the top echelons of the Saudi regime of involvement in the murder. He also named Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the guy pulling the strings and called bin Salman a schizophrenic who must go.
In pointing a finger at bin Salman, Graham is apparently expressing the spirit of senior Republicans and, at the same time, smashing the theory that rogue elements were behind the murder a theory senior White House and Saudi officials tried to advance in recent days in order to distance suspicions from bin Salman ...

Washington (CNN) Facing scrutiny for cultivating close ties with Saudi Arabia's powerful and domineering crown prince, Jared Kushner has remained intentionally in the background this week as West Wing officials feared a more public role would prompt backlash, multiple people familiar with the matter say ...
Senior administration officials said Kushner's close relationship with bin Salman was an early cause for concern among career national security staffers, who worried off-the-books conversations with the young prince could lead to misunderstandings or worse. Kushner is known to have messaged with the prince on the communication app WhatsApp ...
Kushner was walking off a flight from Washington to New York on Tuesday when a reporter seated several rows ahead of him attempted to ask about Khashoggi's disappearance.
"I don't give a damn who you work for," a Secret Service agent traveling with Kushner said when the reporter on the plane identified himself. "There's a time and a place" ...
