DU Demographics: Where are you?

I got curious about who we are here on DU, and thought I'd do a couple of polls (my first-be gentle with me) to see how the DU demo shakes out. It might be interesting to see how many progressives are in various places. Thanks to all responders!

Still racist but the feeling of independence/individualism that seems so strong in the central western states - that's what I feel in Texas. It's got some things in common with the deep south but it's still different. Frankly I'm surprised Texas didn't remain it's own country after declaring independence from Mexico.

Certain rural portions and parts of the Panhandle might be considered "Deep South" culturally, but the entire state is a diverse mix.

The only states I view as entirely "Deep South" would be Alabama, Mississippi, and maybe Louisiana. There are also large portions of Georgia that would fall under the catagory, but the Atlanta area makes things somewhat different.

I remember the Daily Show segment where they made light of the different mentalities of North and South Delaware!

I'm a South Floridian. Although I will say, some crazy politics aside, I do love some of the terrific natural beauty that North Florida has to offer. So as different as the two ends might be, I still love em both.

I guess I'd call Florida Southeast but understand (believe me!) the Deep South feel. And Texas too. Gulf side South and border area West? And what's Midwest and what's North is a tough call too. So I decided to put up what I commonly hear as designations and let the replies bring out the interesting geograpy/feel disparity or congruity.

I moved here from the Southern Plains, so that's saying something.
It's beautiful, peaceful (I live in a mid-19th century farmhouse on a ton of land), and I love my job.

But there's no culture around here. Central Ohio can't seem to decide if it's the Bible Belt or the Northeast (though Cleveland is totally rad, but that's kind of far away). And I hate the Buckeyes. And the fact that I'm in a swing state means that I get bombarded with Romney's face. Yick.

Fortunately I like my job and my friends. And my house. Oh, and the deer that chill out in my yard.

otherwise people from Ohio and Michigan might think they are in the midwest.

Which they are, by the traditional meaning of the term. But it is a very New York-centric term. To call Ohio mid-WEST when it is 2,451 miles from San Fransisco and only 763 miles from Boston. Ohio is well to the EAST of much of the land mass of the continental US. Closer to the Atlantic Ocean than it is even to St. Louis. 409 miles from Columbus to Baltimore, 421 from Columbus to St. Louis, and even St. Louis is a couple hundred miles (or more) east of the center of the continental US.

because Columbus (and its environs) sure as hell isn't the northeast. It reminds me of a colder, slightly hillier version of Oklahoma City. Tons of churches, loudmouth idiot conservatives, and a southern mentality that doesn't make a whole lot of sense based on the geography.

I've lived in NJ, CA, OK, Mexico, and now OH. OH is definitely the weirdest place I've ever lived.

My ex brother in law's father was foreman for one of the big ranchers in Modoc County and he used to hire us to help him guide antelope hunts back in the day. He was also one of the original "State of Jefferson" people and he had one of the original flags in his yard and a living room full of photographs of the old timers in front of the courthouse in Alturas.

We used to think it was all bullshit but then we found out it was the real deal.

I grew up in Michigan and technically both are midwest states. But, the culture is very different. But, then any rural culture would be different from a city culture. Perhaps if I lived in one of the many podunk towns in Minnesota it would feel just like back in Michigan, but I have never set foot in one of those towns let alone live there, so I dunno. Anyway, being in the Twin Cities doesn't feel like the midwest I grew up in.
