http://openchannel.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/08/13/13262285-mormon-church-earns-7-billion-a-year-from-tithing-analysis-indicates?lite
The church claims 14 million members around the world, more than half outside the United States. All are supposed to tithe, or give 10 percent, of their income, which Mormons frequently interpret as pre-tax earnings. But only about 40 percent of Mormons counted by the church actually attend weekly services in the United States and Canada, and in many countries, including Mexico and Brazil, only a quarter of nominal members are active, according to Cumorah, an independent research group headed by a devoted, active Mormon.

OP
Doesn't it play into GOP hands to use taxation to destroy political opponents?

Both used to influence the weak-minded.

Why can't we persuade them to our side?
I mean, apart from the incessant belittling insults we constantly heap upon their most cherished values, you'd think if they were as weak-minded as some claim then they would just as prone to hear and follow our messages as they would Fox or Limbaugh or whatever based on whichever argument they heard most recently. Then we could be happy because then we could brag our party was the party of the weak-minded and easily led.

The Mormon church also owns/controls any number of businesses both brick & mortar as well as online.
