I offer up the basic principles of Star Trek on this night.

-- Wealth is meaningless
-- Power is only for focus
-- Everyone is welcome
-- We have to grow up
-- We belong in the stars
-- Sometimes we have to fight (and die) for these principles.

When watching Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Enterprise, it helps to repeat this litany:

Too slow, too late, too stupid, incompetent.
It explains almost every trouble they create for themselves.
