http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1241752--leader-of-anti-semitic-party-in-hungary-discovers-he-is-jewishThen came a revelation that knocked him off his perch as ultra-nationalist standard-bearer: Szegedi himself is a Jew.
Following weeks of Internet rumours, Szegedi acknowledged in June that his grandparents on his mothers side were Jews making him one too under Jewish law, even though he doesnt practice the faith. His grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor and his grandfather a veteran of forced labour camps.

(18,807 posts)That seems to happen a lot in those sorts of cases, where someone finds something like that out and are shocked enough that they start reevaluating a lot of things.

(36,827 posts)How can you NOT know that one of your grandparents survived Auschwitz? I also didn't see anything in the article where he has apologized for his actions or shown the least bit of remorse, but maybe he has.

He could just be coming to terms with being outed or he could be sincere about it - I've seen the latter a few times. Whichever it is, though, he's got a pretty ugly road he'll have to travel to get past what has been for his public life.

(36,827 posts)I'm not going to pretend to know what's going on in this guy's mind, but his actions speak volumes. When someone confronted him with his secret, did he seek to redeem himself at that point? No, he offered the guy a job for his silence. That tells me he had a strong desire to continue to live a lie. In other words, his hate was more important to him than who he really is.

(18,807 posts)It is an outright fascist party however much people sugarcoat it; they got in the news a few months ago over testing their members genetically to make sure there wasn't any Jewish or Roma ancestry in their membership, that sort of thing. If they find out someone's got the wrong stuff in their bloodline they've always gone even more nuts than usual in response.
I can believe that a member of that party would try to bribe someone into keeping silent about that; I could also believe that if the party found out a member had Jewish ancestry they would be willing to fake something like that to kick out the 'offending' member, as even in the current climate they can't quite come right out and say "we kicked him out for having a Jewish ancestor."
We'll see what comes out in the end of course. Jobbik is certainly evil and membership in it passes that on to its members. Is this guy actually going to face that now? I just don't know, though I certainly hope he does.
