Calif. GOP caucus chair steps down after siding with Democrats on tax measure

It appears that California Assemblyman Brian Nestande, R-Palm Desert (Riverside County), is the latest victim of the state GOP’s intransigent position on taxes.

Nestande surprised his colleagues Monday when he voted with Democrats to close a corporate tax loophole in order fund scholarships for middle income college students. On Tuesday, he announced that he was stepping down as Republican caucus chairman, saying he “decided to take the side of my constituents and California businesses” with his vote Monday.

Like Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher — the formerly Republican representative from San Diego who broke with his party for similar reasons earlier this year to become an independent and who also voted in favor of the change Monday — Nestande said many California businesses support the tax change and more than a dozen GOP-controlled states already have a similar policy in place.

... “I cast a vote yesterday as the only Republican to level the playing field for California businesses, so we have the same corporate tax policy as Texas, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Mississippi, Michigan, Indiana, Utah and 10 other states,” Nestande said. ” I specifically named those states because they have Republican Governors that are considered leaders in our party today. They gave their home-based corporations an advantage and so should we.
