It seems like we are well on our way to becoming a modern day Gilead with millions of Trump supporting women looking forward to playing the role of Serena Joy.

COLUMBIA, Mo. Standing in an airplane hangar in the mid-autumn chill awaiting the arrival of President Trump, Joan Philpott said she was angry and scared. Only Mr. Trump, she said, can solve the problems she worries most about.
He wants to protect this country, and he wants to keep it safe, and he wants to keep it free of invaders and the caravan and everything else thats going on, said Ms. Philpott, 69, a retired respiratory therapist.
Ms. Philpott was one of thousands of women who braved a drizzle for hours to have the chance to cheer Mr. Trump at a rally here on Thursday. While political strategists and public opinion experts agree that Mr. Trumps greatest electoral weakness is among female voters, here in Columbia and places like it, the president enjoys a herolike status among women who say he is fighting to preserve a way of life threatened by an increasingly liberal Democratic Party. He understands why were angry, Ms. Philpott said, and he wants to fix it.

As Republican candidates battle to keep their congressional majorities in the midterm elections on Tuesday, Mr. Trump is crisscrossing the country to deliver a closing argument meant to acknowledge and in many cases stoke womens anxieties. At rally after rally, he has said that women want security, warning of encroaching immigrants, rising crime and a looming economic downturn if Democrats gain power.

(5,445 posts)especially immigrants from Mexico, Central and South America. And guess what? It works-- nativism works on many Americans. Xenophobia and tribalism are widespread traits that just need to be triggered-- conservatives may be more susceptible to fears of the "other", but tribalism affects many, many Americans. At some level we even see tribalism here at DU-- just think of the ways people here supported their favorite candidate for President and demonized their opponents. Having Fox News and right wing propaganda outlets available obviously helps the GOP, but the mainstream will dutifully report what Republicans and the President are saying.

(11,495 posts)This is pure "cult" worship, nothing else. Truly gullible people are prone to follow cult like groups. They are fed the same talking points over, and over, and over again with the "cult leader" in this case trump, convincing them he, and those who think like him, are the only ones that can save you. Once they get their hooks in you they milk the followers of money, self esteem, and rational thinking, making "everyone" who is not part of the "cult" the enemy. They are taught not to believe what may point out as "false", kind of like trump and the media, only believe the leader or organization no matter what because everyone else is lying, not the cult leader.
As the old saying goes there is a sucker born every minute, and in this case trump has found a whole lot of them.

(34,119 posts)Oh dear, where is my smelling salts? Clutching my pearls and falling into my fainting couch. I just need me a big strong man to keep me safe. Honestly, even if I was looking for that and I am certainly not, Trump would not even come close to that person. When I see him I never even think of a man. Just a big bag of mostly rotten KFC.
Sorry, I just needed to say that.

(32,057 posts)They don't think of anything beyond their white privilege and the myth their husbands tell them that it's being taken away. And of course only another man can protect them. (I think of Trump as more of a cowardly pig than a man).

(937 posts)I have spent the last month canvassing in Arizona. We knock on the doors of Dems and Independent voters. Every woman who has answered the door and talked to us has expressed her disgust with the orange idiot. Women STRONGLY detest him. The only anxiety we have heard is worrying that the Dems wont prevail and send a loud enough message. We are in higher income neighborhoods with suburban, college educated women. They are angry, and they have voted.

(22,431 posts)How many of the women you're talking to are white? The majority of white women voters have picked the Democratic presidential candidate only twice since 1964. Twice.

(17,390 posts)...based on racism.
In a nutshell, it is vote for Trump to protect you and your daughters from being raped by brown people. Of course, if you and your daughter accuse a white male, then Trumplicans will accuse you of being a lying slut.
In the end, it is just another example of how racism is used to not only oppress minorities, but the white working class, including white women, whose social security and health care are being placed at risk under Republican rule.

(22,431 posts)They fear losing the privilege they have under white patriarchy.

(9,350 posts)I agree with you that the white women who support Trump are really afraid of losing the privilege that come from their white husbands. They are not afraid of being raped, or abused by brown, or black men; they are afraid that brown and black men will be allowed to get on equal footing with white men and the benefit that white women get from being married to and/or daughters of white men will be erased. Trump is not protecting them from violence and crime; he is protecting them from an equal playing field.

(17,390 posts)It is important to understand why to see what we need to do to beat Trump. For example, Trump uses his racist fear mongering to get white women to support him even though his administration has been hostile to claims of sexual harassment, and he has appointed far fewer women, then either Obama or even Bush.
