Young people dont vote. At least thats what weve been hearing for a long time. It has been true that young voters, in particular those ages 18-29, have voted in far lower numbers than older voters, in particular those over 65. This year, however, that truism might become significantly less true. Harvards Institute of Politics has polled Americans 18-29 years old every other year, just before the elections, going back to 1986, and this years numbers suggest the highest youth vote rate since that year. Four of 10 of those surveyed declared they would definitely vote this year. The figure was 27 percent in 2010 and 26 percent in 2014. If that apples-to-apples comparison holds, this years youth vote would be truly historic.

(12,618 posts)But it should be closer to 90%, not only for young people but for everybody. People suffered enormously and died for us to have this right. It's criminal that more of us don't exercise it. And young people especially are going to experience the effects of the actions (or lack thereof) of the current leaders later in life. They should be more engaged.

(31,261 posts)The decisions that will affect the world that they will grow old in are being made today, and the near future (10-15 years). By not voting, they are saying that they are ok with the world that we leave them, that they don't want any changes to that plan.

(258 posts)I had to stress the importance of voting to my two nephews (one 28, the other 33). Both of them felt their votes wouldnt matter! I just got a text that the 28 yo voted (straight D) in Charlotte NC. No word from the 33 yo in Denver. Its so frustrating! My son (27) has always voted since he was 18. I blame my older sister for my nephews attitudes.

(51,627 posts)I just had to call my tv cable company due to problems and while waiting I asked the technician if she was voting, she said , "No I have to work". That pissed me off. I asked if she could do it before or after work but her response was, "I will vote in the next election" which I responded with, "There may not be a NEXT election if this one goes badly".
