"Don't worry! I'm definitely going to vote!"
Early voting here in North Carolina ended yesterday
So today I'm pounding doors trying to get people to turn out on Tuesday
Some doors haven't answered earlier knocks so I'm still learning folk have moved
At other doors, people say they already voted: maybe, maybe not, but I thank them and continue down my list
Now and then, somebody's angry or clueless or just plain strange, but it's quite rare, and we need all kinds to make our world
After three and a half hours, I'm at the last address
Behind the door, a man's voice asks what I want
I say I'm a party volunteer and name the woman I'm looking for
The man opens the door, beaming brightly
I explain myself again
Yes, she's here
He turns and repeats my spiel into the living room
Don't worry! I'm definitely going to vote! she says
I express my hope that she will vote Democratic
Absolutely!
She has our list of candidates in hand. I double-check that she knows where her polling place is (she does) and whether she needs a ride (she doesn't)
Her companion then reminds her to vote against all six constitutional amendments -- which is the last recommendation at the bottom of our list of candidates
Some days I love this town
