Are you tired of "winning" yet? According the news release, they claimed that home improvements are down and the cost is overwhelming their bottom line.

(10,177 posts)Menard's and Home Depot and out of sight out of mind.
Lowe's is a much nicer, cleaner, well organized store than either of them, but I forget about them because they're not running an inane jingle on t.v. every hour or two.
We try to support them because Lowe's is blue too!

(7,252 posts)We just bought a washing machine to replace the one we got from them 11 years ago. The customer service is excellent. They hauled away the old one and installed the new one. We also bought our dishwasher there as well as the dryer about 8 years ago.
MineralMan
(146,338 posts)that's a pretty small number to shut down. Apparently the ones they're closing aren't performing as expected. There could be lots of reasons for that.
I doubt this will affect people's available choices for home improvement and other related products, somehow. There are at least 10 Lowe's stores within a half hour drive from my home.

(11,655 posts)They are shutting 3 within 40 miles of me, but thankfully not the closest one. I shop at Lowe's quite frequently. I like to use the local farm store for most things, but they don't have lumber, and I will not spend a dime at Home Depot. Someone gave me a gift card to HD last year and I gave it away since it had already been paid for but I refuse to darken their entrance.

(146,338 posts)There are a number of them not far from me, though. So, if I need something I check to see where it's in stock. A couple of years ago, I needed a new snowblower. I watched the sales at all of the major outlets, until I saw a very good price at Lowe's. So, I checked stock online and went to the closest store that had that loss-leader-priced unit in stock. I went on the first day of the sale so that price would stick, since they usually run out of the teaser model quickly.
There it was. I arranged set-up and delivery and it was in my garage the next morning. I can access about 10 Lowe's stores within a half hour drive from my home, so losing one here or there won't affect me at all.
What I'm saying is that closing 51 stores out of 2400 is not a major deal. Odds are, every one of them is in an area where there are others close-by.

(65,230 posts)One, i'm not surprised to see. Granite City is a pretty depressed area these days and people likely can't afford to be doing home improvements other than the things to keep the house livable.
The store closing in Gurnee is a surprise as that's a fairly affluent area.

(6,496 posts)In past years we have bought a ton from Lowe's or Home Depot, but we didn't do any home improvements this year. First time it wasn't needed in years. It's a nice change of pace.

(6,936 posts)Doubt that anyone is buying deck lumber on Amazon and having it shipped. As I've said over and over, this Trump "boom" is smoke and mirrors Wall St. nonsense and this is more proof of it.

(23,351 posts)However, I avoid Lowes and HD whenever possible. Theyre so big...I cant get help when I need it. I go to the locally owned Ace...they have what I need most of the time, the clerks are knowledgeable, helpful and have been there forever...I can get in and out quickly. They also maintain lawn mowers and snowblowers at a great price.

Lowes store which is now suddenly closed. Customers milling around perplexed/shocked on the street trying to read the tiny crappy sign on the front door. Delivery men with large wooden pallets of big boxes and other "stuff" obviously trying to deliver INTO Lowes milling around by the front and side entrances on their phones trying to find out what the hell they should do. Talk about folding your tent and slinking off secretly into the night. Sheesh! It was open yesterday!

I could see this with Home Depot...
A HERETIC I AM
(24,380 posts)Menard's has 305 stores in 14 states.
Lowes has almost 2400 and Home Depot has over 2200 stores in all 50 states, Canada and overseas.
Menards is a piker compared to those two.

(17,865 posts)and a fourth (the second Mennards) near my house about ten miles away from the other three. They did a big expensive expansion on the Waterloo store 10 or so years ago when the other two stores went in (Home Depot and Lowes). I thought they would have been better off moving immediately to Cedar Falls and closing the Waterloo store.

(20,221 posts)One has to question the wisdom of opening stores so close together in the first place. We have 16 in the Houston area, compared to Home Depot's 11, and none are being closed.
