Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Dems flipped SEVEN governorships. That's a big deal. (+ Guam...let's not forget Guam!)

Michigan. Wisconsin. Illinois. Kansas. (Kansas? That was a surprise!) Maine. New Mexico. Nevada.
(NOTE: STACEY ABRAMS IN GEORGIA HAS NOT CONCEDED.)
(The Repubs may pick up Alaska from an Independent...results not finalized yet, on CNN. But the Repub has a solid lead.)
FIRST FEMALE GOVERNORS IN THE FLIP LIST:
**MAINE
**GUAM (wish Guam were a state; there's actually a bill proposed to make Guam & Puerto Rico states)

Hopefully the state can start to get rid of all the bullshit that was implemented there.

(13,040 posts)i feel the governors races the Dems took is grossly understated as one of the biggest achievements of the night.

(128,916 posts)and the redistricting process!
True Blue American
(17,984 posts)Ohio voters took care of that by voting on an Independent Committee. One thing DeWine can not touch.
BumRushDaShow
(128,916 posts)And that may positively impact the districts in OH and give a fairer representation in the state legislature.

Well... At least Sherrod Brown got re-elected, so given all the media drama about that race, it was good news.
True Blue American
(17,984 posts)Dayton Daily writer had a articls about Sherrod. If he won by a landslide would his next stop be the WhiteHouse?
He was on Hillarys short list. I think she made a mistake by not choosing him. Ohio would have been hers, but we do not want to lose him.

(6,496 posts)LePage was termed out. Still that was a great win to get the first female Maine governor (and a Dem) following that asshole LePage. LePage made Mills his nemesis, who was the Attorney General at the time, so it's pretty interesting that she won. I think it says something about how Mainers felt about LePage. Also nice is that Mills won with 50% of the vote with 3 people running. That race wasn't a ranked choice race, but the ranking wouldn't have been needed because she got at least 50% of the vote. LePage never received that much of the vote in any of his races.
BumRushDaShow
(128,916 posts)Doesn't matter whether there was an incumbent in there or not. The fact that LePage won TWICE (and couldn't run a 3rd time) means that whoever was voting in Maine was voting for a crazy-ass (R).
NOW the people of Maine have awoken and didn't select another (R)... Which might not bode well for Susan Collins (whether she tries to run for her Senate seat again in 2020 OR if she considers running for Governor there down the road - one of the options that kept coming up for her for 2022).
And as a sidenote not really mentioned much but Angus King swept himself back into office without any drama.
Siwsan
(26,260 posts)The Secretary of State, and most likely the Attorney General are also flipping. The AG race is very close, but Dana Nessel is still in the lead, with 93% of the vote counted.

Siwsan
(26,260 posts)We've definitely lost people. BUT, I guess even GOPers figured it best to not elect the partner/enabler of a serial poisoner to the top office in the state. If Dana Nessel holds her thin lead, all of the top posts will be Democrats. Oh, and females! I'm figuring that might be a first.
BumRushDaShow
(128,916 posts)I think the whole Flint crises left an ugly mark on the state and although it might not be voiced "publicly" by certain locals, it was reflected in the election outcome.
And when you mentioned "females" - here in PA, for the first time ever, we are sending an all-female contiguous-district contingent of women to Congress!!!! I.e., PA-4, PA-5, PA-6, & PA-7 have elected women. These districts are all in suburban Philadelphia and just to the north.
The PA congressional delegation hasn't had a female among them since Allyson Schwartz gave up her seat in 2014 to run for Governor (she lost & she had been in the old PA-13 which was generally replaced by the new PA-4).

(24,926 posts)We elected Keith as our AG (he was my rep when he was in the House), we elected a Dem governor to keep the governorship, both of our Dem senators were reelected, we flipped two House seats and I think we retook the MN state House.

(128,916 posts)Here in PA I am happy we were able to persist with the gerrymandering cases and contributed 3 new Democratic seats + Conor Lamb's seat (now in a newly redrawn district).
Before 2018 dawned, the PA Congressional delegation was 13 (R) - 5 (D) with no women. Now as of last night, the delegation is 9 (D) - 9 (R) with 4 women among them. Plus we re-elected our (D) Governor and (D) Senator.

(56,828 posts)they passed several statewide ballot initiatives that were liberal in nature, but then turned around and voted for right wingers that want to strike those policies down
1) raise the minimum wage (one of the first things Pelosi should do - pass it and force the Senate to sit on it)
2) medical marijuana
3) campaign finance reform
4) protecting unions also won bigly

(38,958 posts)on various issues. I was happy to see the Minimum Wage increase pass although it is far too little and spread over far too many years. The state gas tax increase went down in flames which was good from my point of view (I don't think we need to increase any taxes until the Minimum Wage is a living wage), but a sales tax increase for the St. Louis Zoo passed in my area which I thought to be a bad idea.

(13,305 posts)Expand voting access. Roll back voter suppression laws. DEFINITELY at the very least in those states with split rule, Governor can at least veto an regressive policies.
But in the place where we won Governor AND we control the state legislature's? Let's see some fucking action!
I'm as excited about the state houses we won as much as I am winning back the house.

(2,768 posts)Seems you need to have the state legislatures make the call. Luckily it seems like we took 6 of those back last night as well(according to vox).
Apparently the republicans had control of 33 of them. It takes 34 states to make the call and 38 to approve proposals. I was feeling down about some of the races we lost, but I'm starting to believe last night may have been more successful than many of us are even aware of.

(315 posts)these states just magically reversed course? I mean yes I suppose that's true and people worked really hard to make that happen but at the same time.... really? I think it leads a lot of credence to the questions about the 2016 elections in those states.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Not because I'm a conspiracy theorist or paranoid. But because ALL the evidence we had showed different results. Not just pre-election polls, but the candidate polls, exit polls, who showed up to vote.
They just had to hack a few key purple districts in a couple of states (PA was one). Easy peasy. And maybe they did more than that.

(37,648 posts)That would be interesting to know - how many of those flips are controlled by a Democratic state legislature, if any.
This article says the Governor has VETO POWER over gerrymandering. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/11/5/18058968/elections-2018-governors-races-gerrymandering-redistricting
BumRushDaShow
(128,916 posts)so if a RW legislature with a Democratic governor submits a gerrymandered mess, the governor can veto. And the key here would be whether the RW legislature would have enough to override ("super-majority" ) and push it through anyway.... and a bunch of legislatures lost their GOP super-majorities in one or both chambers last night, including here in PA!

(6,496 posts)Janet Mills was Attorney General and the biggest thorn in LePage's side. So many stupid right wight law suits he wanted Maine to be a part of and she wouldn't let it happen. That makes it even sweeter that she got elected. LePage really doesn't like Mills. This is like electing Hillary Clinton as prez after 8 years of Trump. Mills is a lot like Clinton. LePage is a lot like Trump.

This is the first step in ending minority rule by the GOP. You need only look at what happened in Pennsylvania once a new map was put in place. The congressional delegation now reflects the state.

(14,572 posts)We did well last night - not as well as some of the more fervent among us hoped, but well nonetheless. Unfortunately, we haven't made up all the ground we lost to Republicans down-ticket in 2010.
This country still has a major, major problem with racism - it is arguably why we lost so many seats in 2010, and lost more in 2014. Obama was a great president - he really was, but all those dog whistles brought out the racist vote.
So now, we've gained ground back.
To me a couple of standouts:
1. Florida is now going to allow over a million ex-felons to vote. This ought to turn FL solid blue if subsequent GOTV efforts can reach this population.
2. First openly gay governor in Colorado!!! Polis will do fine as governor, and it looks solid blue for AG, Treasurer and SoS.
3. Colorado has now banned slavery or indentured servitude in prisons! This will be good to cut profits in prison industries, because the profit motive doesn't belong in corrections, period.
4. Colorado's new Treasurer has been talking about public banking, which is great.
5. Dems took the state Senate, and retained their majority in the state House, so we'll pass and Polis will sign, the National Popular Vote initiative into law, which will force Colorado Electors to vote the same way the national popular vote went. Time to get rid of the Electoral College.
So...my verdict?
Great wins, but we need to stay SHARP and keep working because it ain't over yet. We still have lots of ignorant, evangelical, xenophobic, homophobic racists in power and we must keep fighting them.
The US House can now work to hold Trump accountable, but they will have to work with Republicans in the Senate and with (ick) Trump to pass some decent bipartisan legislation - not another stupid tax cut, but maybe an infrastructure bill. That would be a major accomplishment. They will also be able to block efforts to get rid of the pre-existing conditions in ACA.
So that's my take. I'm looking forward to hearing what people here from other states have to say about the election results.
Time will tell, but we did win back a lot.

(37,648 posts)I got these mainly from CNN, which has a map, plus I doublechecked other sites for any updated information, to make sure CNN was up to date.
CNN's map has a "flipped" button, which shows the states on the map that flipped (fr governor or House or Senate).
https://www.cnn.com/election/2018/results/governor
look for button at lower left, that says "flipped". Make sure the category at top is for "Governor." You should see the blue-colored governor races that flipped. (except for Maine, which hasn't been logged as a flip on the map, but has been called for the Democratic candidate, as a flip from Republican LePage - this is in several other sources, including https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_LePage )
