General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe have to do this again in 2020 with an eye to state races. Too soon?
7 or 8% more democrats voted in yesterday's election and we barely won a majority. 28 house seats.
5.7% more republicans voted in 2010 and they won 63 house seats.
Then, they gerrymandered the hell out of the country making it that much more difficult for Dems to win.
Districts will be redrawn after the 2020 election. We need state houses and governorships and the presidency.
Let us all bask in the relief this election brought us (7 governors flipped blue, none flipped red) then start again.

(52,438 posts)because of the gerrymandering based on the 2010 census, a lot of people thought we didn't have a chance of winning the house at all this decade.
but we did!

(315 posts)Where's the game plan and what's the prep work? We don't necessarily know all the candidates yet but how can we be setting up the systems now? We have energy and we need to use it!
Campaign season starts like now.

(21,825 posts)The fact is: there is no such thing as an "off-year" in elections anymore.
EVERY year in elections is now critical. In the so-called "off-years", except for maybe 1-2 US Senate or Governor races, the elections in the odd-number years are local, Local, LOCAL
While these races for small offices may look insignificant, the fact is, these positions, more than at the state or national level, affect you as a resident of your local village/town/city. These are local officials we're talking about, (mayors/supervisors, city councils, town/village boards, county executives, county legislators, etc.)
People who run and win in those positions often get their first taste as an elected official and use these small positions as stepping-stones for bigger positions at the state, then national levels several years from when they first started.
Which is why voting in 2019 will be equally important.
These small offices are where the bench of future candidates gets built
The GOP recognized this decades ago. We Democrats must do the same.
