First of all, they must take control of their message. They are not "investigating" Donald Trump. They are performing their responsibility of "oversight". Their words are important. Russia attacked our electoral system in 2016 and it would be traitorous to not find out the truth about how it happened and who was involved?
Secondly, they must understand that getting in the mud with a pig is counter-productive. If this election shows us anything, it is that arguments about "whose mother is the ugliest" do not work in this political environment. We should learn from the campaigns of Andrew Gillum and Beto O'rourke.. People are looking to be inspired and want to see the good in America. They do not want to see who has the better attack. They want a contrast from the Democratic Party that lifts us up.
Also, we should all have learned that Donald Trump will use any opportunity to attack anyone that disagrees with him. He has not changed. Democrats, in my opinion, should present to him legislation that he can sign for the benefit of the country or he would be put on the defensive. But, they have to respond to Donald Trump.
However, they need to be smart about it. One thing that I think they should do is to have a "Twitter Response team". Once a day, they should come out with a news conference or a statement to counter or to rebuke every tweet that comes from the White House. I think that might be a good start to rebuilding a majority.

(4,830 posts)Be smart. If Trump cries investigation, I agree they should correct the error. However, Trump baits everyone with his Tweets. Not worth the effort. The media will chase the shiny object. We need them to focus on the real work product.

(111,089 posts)Because it is his tweets that are setting the news story almost every day. He gets up very early to make sure of that. It is a method of propaganda that is very effective and should be addressed. Most of the time, his tweets are outright lies. He should not be permitted to continue without a response.

And we Definitely need a more savvy media plan like you said. Convene a group of experts and brainstorm ways to combat Trump's propaganda.
