MI: Oakland County Board of Commissioners majority Democratic for third time in history

or the first time in 42 years, there will be more Democrats serving on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners than Republicans.

Beginning in January, the board will have 11 Democratic members and 10 Republican members. This will be the third time in board history that the Democrats have had the majority (1972-1974, 1976). The 2016 to 2018 county board was a 14-to-7 member split in favor of the Republicans.

Following Tuesday's vote, three incumbent Republican commissioners lost their bid for reelection including: Tom Berman, R-Keego Harbor, Hugh Crawford, R-Novi, and Wade Fleming, R-Troy.

Berman was seeking his second term while Crawford and Fleming were seeking their third terms.

Gwen Markham, Novi city council member, defeated Crawford in his bid for reelection. She said the residents in District 9, which includes Novi, Novi Township and a portion of Northville, want board members to get things done while having a more regional mindset.
